Method

  1. Put the butter, hazelnuts, vanilla extract and 85g of the icing sugar in a food processor and whizz to a paste. Add 1 tsp of the ground cloves and the flour, and pulse together until a dough forms.
  2. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Line a couple of baking sheets with baking parchment. Roll the dough into walnut- sized balls and arrange on the baking sheets. Use the back of a fork to lightly squash each ball, then bake for 12-15 mins until they turn a pale biscuit colour - if they get too brown, they will become dry.
  3. Mix the remaining icing sugar and ground cloves, then sieve thickly over the hot biscuits. Leave to cool slightly before eating just warm, or cool.

Just made this for first time. Trying to find something for homemade gifts. Very nice, even husband who dislikes cloves approved. But why does the recipie call for 250g icing sugar, only use 85g in biscuits and the rest 165g sifted on the top of the cooked biscuits. I smothered them very thickly and still have a load left! I always try a recipie and follow it first time round, this is another that I shall be adjusting by basically halving the amount of icing sugar to dredge on the top.

I agree with Sandie K, no need for 250g icing sugar. I just used two teaspoons of icing sugar and half teaspoon of cloves, was more than enough to give biscuits a good dredging! Tasted good, but I think I will try another spice than cloves next time, maybe mixed spice would be more Christmassy!

Unusual flavour for biscuits but good Christmas flavour. The hazelnuts gave these biscuits good texture.

I reversed the icing sugar quantities, kept back 85g, used 165g in recipe, seemed to work. Also baked them a little longer. Very tasty
