  • 1 small red pepper, deseeded
  • 8 rashers rindless streaky bacon, chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 tsp mild chilli powder
  • 500g carton passata
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 410g can borlotti bean
  • 410g can cannellini bean

Method

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pan. Finely chop the celery sticks, onion and red pepper and gently fry until soft, about 10 mins. Set the softened veg aside and fry the bacon in the same pan until golden and crisp. Tip in the garlic clove and chilli powder and cook for 1 min.

  2. Pour in passata, maple syrup, Worcestershire sauce and the softened veg and stir well.

  3. Rinse and drain the borlotti beans and cannellini beans. Tip into the pan, bring to the boil and simmer for 10 mins. Season to taste and serve with jacket potatoes.

Absolutely brilliant! Made a few changes, an orange pepper instead of red and a red onion, also used Haricot beans instead of Cannellini beans, but they were so lovely! Served with a jacket spud and sausages. Will definitely be making again.

Did 2 x quantity for party of 12 last night for fireworks. Yum yum yum. Will be making again just for us for supper!! Did use hot chill powder rather than mild to give it a bit of a kick. Delicious and so easy.

Amazing! Make this all the time and absolutely love it.

tried this but had to use the oven for convenience (cooking for a crowd) - so placed it all in an oblong glazed roasting dish and spread thin cut streakey bacon on top. The smokey flavour of the bacon really enhanced the beans.

I need to triple this amount for a large bbq - can I make it the day before and warm it through on the evening?Maybe use the slow cooker? (My fridge will be over full probably!)
Also as I have to make it without bacon for a vegetarians would it be a good idea to add liquid smoke to the recipe to enhance the flavour?
