  1. Put the oil in a frying pan and cook the onion until soft. Add the carrot, celery and garlic and cook until lightly browned. Mix in the mince, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook, stirring often, until the meat is browned. Add the thyme, tomatoes, stock, Worcestershire sauce and parsley, and season to taste. Cover tightly and simmer for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/gas 6/fan 180C.

  2. Sift the flour and baking powder and rub in the butter. Add the cheese and herbs, then the yogurt, and mix to a soft dough. Turn out on to a lightly floured board and knead lightly. Roll to about 1cm/1⁄2in thick and cut out 9 rounds.

  3. Tip the mince mixture into an ovenproof dish. Casually arrange the dough circles on top of the mince and brush with egg or milk. Bake for about 20-25 minutes until the topping is risen and golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

Just a point to note for anyone with a gluten allergy who tries this recipe, Worcestershire sauce is not gluten free unless you buy one that specifically says it's gluten free on the bottle.

made this last night, went down well. I used buttermilk in the scones as no yoghurt to hand. I didn't go down the gluten free road and used ordinary cheddar, but it worked out well. Made a nice change from cottage pie.

I thought this was very good. We don't like celery so I increased the amount of carrot and included a bit of chopped swede.
I wasn't sure whether my Worcestershire sauce was gluten-free so I substituted tamari.
I also had to add extra milk to get the dough to bind.

Very good. I needed to add a little milk or water to make a dough and I easily obtained 12 rounds cut with a 48mm cutter.

Which worcestshire sauce is used please, as the best known brand does have gluten in it. X

I eat normal Worcester sauce and never had a problem but can understand that others may be more sensitive. Definitely going to try this recipe, looks really interesting!

Reply to Savahanna.. Some coeliacs are very sensitive to ANY gluten, however small ppm, so better be safe than sorry and have Tamari instead of Worcestershire sauce..:)

I have read the comments above with regard to Worcestershire Sauce not being gluten free and I would like to quote what my food and drink directory 2010 from the Coeliac Society says about it -

"All vinegars are gluten-free. Barley malt vinegar and Worcestershire sauces contain traces of gluten but are all suitable for people with Coeliac Disease" Pg 68

I hope this helps. You can get gluten free Worcestershire Sauce but may not need to.

Very nice, but if you are making this for a guest be careful as Worcester Sauce is not gluten-free - it is wheat free. Was delicious with balsamic vinegar.

Coeliacs could try using gluten free tamari sauce instead of worcester sauce. This gives a delicious flavour.

PLEASE BE AWARE Worcester Sauce is NOT gluten free only wheat free.

If you cannot get gluten free then substitute balsamic vinegar for Worcester Sauce

We've had this recipe twice now and all the family loved it The second time I made it I used milk instead of yogurt. It was ok but better with the yogurt. A big hit with my husband who has to have wheat free.

Made this dish for my two children and niece. My son also has a problem with dairy, so we used Pure dairy free spread and replaced the cheese with Redwood Cheezly easy melting mozerella style (it's very nice as long as you don't think of it as cheese, healthier too! And we used Alpro plain soya yogurt instead of the plain dairy alternative. Didn't have fresh thyme so used dry instead. Don't forget to buy( LIFE FREE FROM WORCESTER SAUCE and KALLO stock cubes) You can buy these products from Holland & Barrett, or good health food shops. I forgot to brush the topping with egg, they were a bit dry but edible, I won't forget next time i make it. Mince was very tasty, would be nice with pasta or vegetables. Yum!!

Again I used Beths biscuit mix. Makes the topping very soft and fresh rather than a hard scone.

Living in Canada, it was still a struggle to find barley malt vinegar-free Worcester sauce, and it did NOT taste the same in food. However, a half and half mix of the gf Worcester sauce and balsamic vinegar comes quite close. Still looking for a substitute for HP Sauce, though.
