Method

  1. Measure the flour, yeast and salt into a large bowl. Mix 300ml hand-hot water with the oil and honey in a jug, then pour into the dry mix, stirring all the time to make a soft dough.

  2. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, then knead for 5 mins until the dough no longer feels sticky, sprinkling with a little more flour as you need it. Now stretch it to fit the Swiss roll tin.

  3. Mix the garlic with the butter, then dot over the dough. Sprinkle over the cheese and snip over the thyme. Cover the bread with lightly oiled cling film, then leave in a warm place to rise for 40 mins.

  4. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Remove the cling film, then bake the bread for 30 mins until golden and risen. Leave to cool for 10 mins, then cut into 12 pieces and serve.

Really tasty bread & my 4yr old loved kneading the dough, dotting the butter and sprinkling the cheese. Will make this a lot.

An excellent recipe. Normally my attempt at making any kind of bread flops big time but this didn't! We all loved it so much. It was nice and light and it rose really well. Just one little thing though, I would have preferred a bit more salt in the mixture next time....fabby!

My first time making bread and it turned out really yummy. I used 4 cloves of garlic and kneaded for 10mins. The smell is amazing!

I've made this a few times now and the family love it and now keep asking me to make it again. Quick and easy recipe with great results. I have also been using basil leaves just pushed into the top of the dough before rising and it's equally delicious.

Didn't need quite as long in my oven. Went down a treat.

In the oven now I only put cheese on half because my brother doesn't like it I also had no thyme so put rosemary on top instead the family are having it with ribs tonight I'll let you know the verdict :)

Tried this recipe for the first time last week and everyone loved it, so much so am just waiting for my second batch to prove. I've added 10g of parmasan to this one as the other was a little too dense flavoured

I made this bread today and put the flour, salt and yeast in, rubbed in 20g butter and added the garlic and cheese then put in water and honey, didn't bother with oil. Poked some rosemary in the top and it was delicious!!!!

Great stuff! First time I've made bread without a machine and it worked a treat! I'm sure you could change it around - add different cheeses, put the garlic into the dough etc. But an easy recipe to follow and a delicious outcome!

Has anyone tried freezing the dough before baking, if so at what stage did you do so? Many thanks

Wow, I love this recipe... it's so much easier than I thought it would be! I added more garlic and cheese (as others suggested) and it turned out great. Will definitely bake again :)

made this last night to go with my lasagne. i kneaded it for 10min, then followed as stated above, however was slightly low on cheddar so added some parmesan as well. couldn't taste the garlic at all after it had baked, so will try either adding more garlic, or maybe putting some garlic in the actual dough - just tasted like cheesy bread. have frozen the half we didnt eat to see if freezes ok.

This recipe is wonderful! I perhaps used a bit more garlic butter than suggested, but otherwise I followed the recipe exactly and it was gorgeous. My boyfriend doesn't like garlic bread, but I had to fight him for the last slice! Brilliant! Thank you!

very easy to make and lends itself to being adapted to include other flavourings, added fresh chopped chillis instead of thyme. very tasty!

Great recipe, used olive oil infused with garlic to really give it that extra bit of flavour.

I added more garlic and halved the mix as when I followed recipe it was thicker than I like. Very quick and tasty though!

Used the basis of the recipe and used buffalo mozzerella and Sweet bell peppers for the topping which was very well received by friends.
