Top ten cakes and bakes

It's National Baking Week and we're marking the occasion by selecting our all-time favourite cakes and bakes. What are yours?

In honour of National Baking Week, the bbcgoodfood.com team have been talking cake (one of our preferred pastimes, second only to eating it). We've each selected a couple of our favourite cakes and bakes from the site - recipes we've enjoyed cooking at home, devoured from the Test Kitchen or been lucky enough to have cooked for us.

Raspberry & chocolate cheesecakeOur editor, Andrea, had lusted after Raspberry & milk chocolate cheesecake for so long that former researcher Holly Jones baked it for her birthday. "It seems she found it irresistible too, for when she brought it round to my house there was a big bite of the creamy topping missing". Andrea's nominating another fruity beauty, Raspberry Bakewell cake. "Everyone I've given it to has liked me that little bit more after tasting it", she claims. Her mum in Australia is also a fan of this storecupboard standby (her tip: keep some raspberries in the freezer when out of season).

Mince piesFood editor Caroline loves Unbelievably easy mince pies, which she finds live up to their name. "The pastry is crumbly like shortbread and the method is really quick", says Caroline. "They're particularly good if you buy a fancy mincemeat to go in them". She's also a fan of Chocolate & banana cake, because the recipe makes two cakes to feed a crowd.

Carrot & cream cheese cupcakesWhen Caroline whipped up a batch of Carrot & cream cheese cupcakes for my birthday this year, Editorial assistant Lily snaffled a few, despite not usually being a big cupcake fan. "They manage to feel indulgent, wholesome and homely", says Lily. "The only trouble is it's very difficult to stop at just one". When it comes to baking herself, Lily can always rely on our all-time top-rated recipe, Lemon drizzle cake. "It even managed to upstage my mother as the centre of attention at her 60th birthday party".

Chocolate browniesThe newest addition to our team, Editorial assistant Roxy, recently discovered The ultimate makeover: Chocolate brownies. "My friend and I were over the moon to find these brownies were half the fat and didn't taste anything like the secret ingredient... mayonnaise!". Another find is the Baked raspberry cheesecake, which Roxy was convinced she'd messed up until she tasted it...

Cream sconesAs for me, I always reach for Jane Hornby's Classic scones with jam & cream for afternoon teas. Jane has a clever tip for recreating the effect of buttermilk, which I often struggle to find in shops. And one cake I was very happy to see emerge from the Test Kitchen was Honey cake with honeyed almond crunch - perfect with my afternoon cuppa.
