Chase rhubarb & Bramley apple gin – 40% ABV

Overall rating: 4.5/5

In a nutshell: A slightly spicy gin that's more autumnal than some other summery, pink flavoured gins. The rhubarb plays second fiddle to the apple, but the two complement each other, evoking warming rhubarb crumble flavours with a crisp freshness.

With terroir so important to the wine industry, Chase Distillery founder Will Chase felt that the same should apply to white spirits. Herefordshire, where the distillery is based, boasts some of the richest red soil in the world, ideal for growing the potatoes that are eventually turned into vodka, gin's base spirit.

Distilled with water taken from Malvern Hills, Chase's gin is infused with juniper buds, berries, cinnamon, ginger, almond, coriander, cardamom, cloves, angelica root, liquorice root and lemon, imparting a full, rich flavour. This is then blended with the farm's pressed rhubarb and Bramley apple juice.

More like this

The gin has a very crisp, refreshing bite. While the rhubarb is present, it does come second to the apples. Although rhubarb & apple is a classic crumble filling, this spirit doesn’t share the sweetness found in the dessert. Expect something much fresher and deliciously aromatic.

We could enjoy this all summer long and right through into autumn, thanks to a warming jolt of cinnamon complementing the fruit.

The perfect pour

Garnish with a slice of fresh green apple to serve, or try using cloudy apple juice over plenty of ice in place of standard tonic.
