  • 350g/12oz plain flour
  • 1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda
  • 1tsp baking powder
  • 250g/9oz butter softened
  • 300g/ 10oz caster sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 X 40g boxes Smarties


    1. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4.
    2. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda,baking powder and a pinch of salt into a mixing bowl, then set a side.
    3. Cream together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy, then beat in the egg and vanilla.
    4. Gradually beat in the sifted dry ingredients to form a stiff dough.
    5. Roll the fough into 20 balls, then place on ungreased baking drays, spaced well apart.(WARNING: THE COOKIES WILL EXPAND LOTS, DO NOT PUT CLOSE TOGETHER!!! )
    6. Press several Smarties into each ball, flattening the ball slightly.
    7. Bake for 15 minutes until pale golden brown.
    8. Leave on trays 2 minutes and remove to cooling racks to cool completely.
    9. Will keep in an airtight tin for up to 5 days
    10. NUTRITION: PER COOKIE : 253 kcalorices, protein 3g, carbohydrate 35g, fat 12g, saturated fat 7g, fibre 1g, sugar 22g, salt o.47g.

Had great fun with the grandkids they are 3 & 4 and we counted the smarties out which helped the with maths.

I have made these cookies several son took them to a youth charity cake stall and they went down a trat i have made them twice more for youth events,,thanks for the recipe xx

These were popular, only made half mixture, and made 18 smaller cookies, good buttery flavour, but thought they might be chewy, bit disappointed that they were crispy. Still good recipe though and would make again.

I was disappointed on making these cookies that the Smarties completely lost their colour when cooked. The cookies were fine but not as colourful as the picture promise. Any solutions?

This is the same recipe as one of Rachel Allen's - it's a definite favourite and I never have any trouble with it : )

Check out how they price compare- they cost about £1.60 to make - much cheaper than a box of posh cookies.

I mixed mine with part margarine and part butter and as I was making a half mixture only used a egg yolk. They came out really nicely and put different sweets and buttons in mine for my friends child themed party.

Really yummy biscuits and my 3 year old son really enjoyed pushing the smarties into the dough balls when they were on the baking sheet. Will definitely cook again as they make a good quantity for sharing.

I make these cookies all the time for friends and they are always moist and gooey! Great recipe
