What is FeastBox?

FeastBox is a recipe delivery service that encourages customers to try new cuisines and develop kitchen skills. It's for adventurous, busy eaters who aren't particularly confident in the kitchen. Pre-measured (and often niche) ingredients are delivered straight to your door, to take the hassle out of cooking ambitious dishes.


FeastBox's sister company, Red Rickshaw, now the largest online global ingredient grocer in the UK, provides all the hard-to-find ingredients. Both FeastBox and Red Rickshaw pride themselves on being climate-smart, minimising food waste and maximising sustainable efforts through packaging. For every FeastBox sold, a donation is made to Action against Hunger.

How does FeastBox work?

To get started, pick four meals to arrive on a delivery day of your choice. You can choose how often you get a box, whether it's weekly, fortnightly, monthly or just a one-off delivery. When you check out you can pick meal preferences for the future (chef's choice, vegan, vegetarian, no fish or no red meat), so that next week's recipe choices are tailored to you.

What are the FeastBox recipe choices like?

There are 16 meals to choose from every week, with each delivery requiring a minimum of two meals and a maximum of four. There are always new recipes to pick from, including pescatarian options (Brazilian fish stew, for example) and exciting ways with meat (think Korean chicken wings, or pork katsu udon). The accompanying carbohydrates are varied too, ranging from rice to flatbreads and udon noodles. On the website, each meal option gives you a short history of the dish and its origin, as well as the nutritional details, allergens and time it takes to complete.

Are there special diet options?

Yes, there are typically six vegan/vegetarian recipes available each week, plus gluten-free options (FeastBox can't guarantee that any recipe is 100% gluten- or allergen-free though, due to its warehouse and suppliers' packaging processes). Allergens are flagged once you click on the recipe, but you aren't able to search for recipes by allergens – the only filters currently available are 'vegan' and 'vegetarian'.

Can you customise recipes?

No. What you see is what you get with FeastBox, but you can avoid certain ingredients (such as red meat or fish) in your recipe choices.

What's in your recipe box?

Numbered recipe cards (nice and big, for easy reading); loose larger ingredients; smaller ingredients in numbered brown bags that correspond to the recipe cards; and meat and fish stored in an insulated sleeve made of recycled cotton offcuts, which keep perishable items fresh and cold for a minimum of 48 hours.

Quality of the ingredients?

The ingredients in our box lasted well (we made four recipes over a two-week period). We were impressed by how fresh the ingredients were – our chapatis, for example, lasted for 10 days in the fridge. But, for us at least, the portions were on the small side.

What are the delivery options?

FreshBox delivers from 9am-6pm from Monday-Friday. On your chosen delivery day, expect a text from a courier giving you a one-hour time slot.

Are the boxes available nationwide?

FeastBox delivers to England, Wales and Scotland (including the Scottish Highlands). Deliveries to offshore areas such as the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands or the Isles of Scilly aren't always doable, and delivery to Northern Ireland isn't currently possible. FeastBox notes that deliveries to areas further away from London may take one day longer – but you should still expect fresh ingredients.

How much packaging is there?

Most of the box was recyclable. Plastic is used to protect smaller and more fragile ingredients such as spinach, noodles and oil, but FreshBox is working on developing its packaging. The insulation for its chilled goods is made out of recycled offcuts from the cotton and denim industry, which can be recycled and reused. The box and paper bags are recyclable. We like how the gel packs can be used again – a lot of recipe kits come with excessive ice packs that do not fit in average freezers.

Does it offer good value for money?

With meals starting at £5.50 per person (and going up to nearly £10 per person), a FeastBox is definitely on the more expensive side. But niche ingredients feature regularly (such as gochujang paste and shiitake mushrooms), so the corresponding price isn't surprising.

How easy is the recipe to make?

For the average home cook, a FeastBox recipe is pretty easy to follow. Make sure you read the instructions properly, though, as there are often numerous steps to complete. Ingredients such as shaoxing wine and cornflour are measured out for you, plus the meat products we tried came prepared and ready to cook. The balance between what you had to prepare yourself (chopping vegetables or mixing spices together, for example) and pre-prepared ingredients was spot on.

What are the finished recipes like?

We tried out the punjabi thali, mushroom lo mein, prawns in black bean sauce and adana kebabs. As the ingredients were fresh, there was quite a lot of prep involved. Cooking the mushroom lo mein, for example, involved chopping the cabbage, shiitake mushrooms and spring onions – we appreciated the detailed instructions on how to chop everything and the time guidelines for how long to cook them for.

All dishes came out close to the professional photographs and we didn't have to add any seasoning. Final step-by-step instructions on how to plate up and decorate each dish gave our dinners a professional look.

Is there any food waste?

None whatsoever! Everything delivered is used up in the recipes.

What utensils do you need to make the recipes?

All the basics (saucepan, pot, spoon, casserole dish) – you can guess what else you may need from the photos and descriptions online.

Who would FeastBox be most useful for?

Couples, roommates or single people with a disposable income who want to impress friends at a small dinner party. It's also a good way to explore new flavours and cuisines without needing a huge pantry.

What is your favourite thing about FeastBox?

How fresh the ingredients were and how well they lasted. Choosing new recipes each week was exciting, as was learning about the background of each dish and discovering where they originated from.

What are the subscription terms?

It's very flexible – choose one-off, weekly, fortnightly or monthly subscriptions. You can also cancel your next box, as long as it's at least six days before the delivery date.
