Over two days, our expert judging panel taste tasted over 30 different chocolate Easter eggs from 12 national supermarkets to bring you our definitive list of top buys for Easter 2022.
We did a completely blind test by removing all packaging before presenting the eggs to the judges. Comments and a score out of 10 was then submitted for each product in the category via anonymous online judging forms. The entire judging process was overseen by an independent adjudicator.
Read on to find out which dark, milk, white, vegan and miniature chocolate eggs we loved, plus our top picks for kids.

Best milk chocolate egg
Winner: Waitrose hidden truffles milk chocolate Easter egg
Don’t be fooled by the simple design – this rich, creamy and not-too-sweet milk chocolate was the best we tasted. But, the boozy truffles are divisive.
Runner up: Aldi The Majestic Egg
This large egg has very thick chocolate and an elegant design. It's sweet, smooth and melts easily.
Buy in-store at Aldi (£14.99)
Best dark chocolate egg
Winner: Waitrose No. 1 hidden truffles dark chocolate Easter egg
The dark chocolate has good thickness and tangy notes, with a sharp snap.
Runner up: Moser Roth dark chocolate lovers duo egg
If you prefer a thicker chocolate, this chunkier egg has a striking design that makes it a good gift, with full-flavoured dark chocolate.
Best white chocolate egg
Winner: Waitrose No. 1 hidden truffles blonde chocolate Easter egg
For something a bit different, this blonde egg is impressive: the thin chocolate is sweet but not too sickly, with strong caramel notes and pleasing salty crunch.
Best vegan egg
Asda free-from dark chocolate egg with vanilla truffles (left), Aldi free-from salted caramel egg with hidden truffles
Winner: Aldi Moser Roth free-from salted caramel egg with hidden truffles
For milk chocolate fans, this has a nice hit of salt and added crunch from caramel pieces, plus indulgent truffles.
Winner: Asda Extra Special free-from dark chocolate egg with vanilla truffles
The smooth dark chocolate has a satisfying snap and fruity notes. Plus, the truffles are good quality.
Best children's egg
Winner: Aldi chocolate ice cream egg
We love the brilliantly fun design of this ice cream egg, which has lots of different flavours, too. The milk chocolate is creamy and thin, while the slightly salted wafer blonde chocolate is especially delicious.
Runner up: M&S Space Eggsplorer
This milk chocolate egg is very sweet, but judges loved the unique design and mini chocolate extras designed to look like planets.
Runner up: Waitrose Sunny Side Sam
For a white chocolate option, this adorable design is a winner, and has good vanilla flavour and thin creamy chocolate.
Best miniature eggs
Winner: Waitrose No.1 delectable duo
This pretty selection of eggs has grown-up flavours, with luxurious centres and different combinations of crispy praline, smooth caramel and chocolate ganache.
Runner up: Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Swiss milk, dark & white chocolate eggs
These individually wrapped truffles reveal an enjoyable variety of flavours, with smooth, firm centres and creamy chocolate.
Runner up: Aldi Specially Selected Exquisite British Bird Eggs
This unusual selection of eggs would be great for decorating a cake, with a pretty selection of different shapes and colours. The small eggs have the best taste, including a dark salted caramel.
Best chocolate bunny
Winner: Aldi Moser Roth milk chocolate hazelnut bunny
The addition of hazelnuts in this bunny provides nutty texture and flavour, balancing the sweet milk chocolate.
Buy in store at Aldi (£1.29)
Runner up: Morrisons milk chocolate sitting bunny
A classic milk chocolate bunny. This is noticeably creamy and sweet, with a good thickness.
Buy in store at Morrisons (£1.50)
