Ikea Tillreda mini fridge in a nutshell

Pros: no-frills efficiency
Cons: freezer compartment

Star rating: 4/5

Available from Ikea (£90)

The all white Ikea mini fridge may look no-frills but it does have a lot going for it. We especially liked the secure door that closes reassuringly firmly.

The speed of the cooling was impressive, and our thermometers showed a steadiness throughout the whole test. All food and drinks stored well and had hardly diminished after a week – only the salad was starting to look a little sad.

The wire shelf may have only one level in the centre, but it is removable, so taller items can easily be stored. In the bottom of the door, the rail is sturdier than many of this style on test with a hard-plastic cross bar rather than wire.

This too was not movable but still, there was space enough for a normal-sized wine bottle plus drinks cans and 2-litre milk carton.

At the top of the door is another fixed railed compartment and a removable butter tray, which when moved means even taller bottles can be stored.

There is a small icebox with a well-fitting door, but this is only for ice cubes. We thought that for some users, the extra space for food storage would have been more useful.

As this fridge is compressor cooled, it was a little noisier than some. However, this was only when the door was opened or temperatures when cooling down. Even then, it was only a light hum.

The built-in thermostat had six clear settings and was easy to see and use. There is no interior light and defrosting is manual but there is a helpful drip tray included.

The clean white fridge did not show fingerprints at all, and wipes down quickly and easily with a smear-free finish that will be a great bonus if the fridge is to be used a lot.

The Tillreda tabletop (or under desk) fridge from Ikea is a no-frills but well-performing fridge. It comes in under £100 yet delivers as well as some of the higher-priced mini fridges we tested.
