There’s no avoiding that this small 3-litre slow cooker from George at Asda is on the flimsy side compared to other slow cookers tested. The outer casing is thin and becomes uncomfortably hot during cooking. It also scratches easily.
The cooker heats quickly and evenly, but there was a little burned on food in the inner pot by the time the food was ready. This washed away easily in the dishwasher following a 15-minute soak.
That said, for all its basicness, this is a good product that made a surprisingly delicious beef stew and chicken curry. Both stews needed an hour longer than the recipe stated, but we were delighted with the end result.
The beef stew was tender and had shrunk a little more than others, as the heat is quite fierce. For the additional hour we turned the temperature to low and let the meat cook gently until it was ready. The chicken was equally tender, tasty and had a lovely fresh colour despite the extra time.
It’s worth nothing that there’s no keep warm function, so serve as soon as the cooking is done.
The inner pot alone is a bargain, it’s a durable, thick, glazed enamel. The lid’s ovenproof and fits well. We’d be quite happy to use it to serve from, though we’d advise being careful carrying it to the table as the handles are quite small.
Cleaning the exterior was a little tricky as it’s not, as would be expected at this price, very high-grade stainless steel. It smeared and needed a little buffing up afterwards.
