For the batter

  • 140g plain flour

  1. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7.

  2. Put the 12 chipolatas in a 20 x 30cm roasting tin with 1 tbsp sunflower oil, then bake for 15 mins until browned.

  3. Meanwhile, make up the batter mix. Tip 140g plain flour into a bowl with ½ tsp salt, make a well in the middle and crack 2 eggs into it.

  4. Use an electric whisk to mix it together, then slowly add 175ml semi-skimmed milk, whisking all the time. Leave to stand until the sausages are nice and brown.

  5. Remove the sausages from the oven – be careful because the fat will be sizzling hot – but if it isn’t, put the tin on the hob for a few mins until it is.

  6. Pour in the batter mix, transfer to the top shelf of the oven, then cook for 25-30 mins, until risen and golden.

  7. Serve with gravy and your favourite veg.

Excellent. well risen but you must have the tin really hot so put it on the gas while you pour in the batter

Really nice much nicer than last attempt. Made double batch one of the boys that hasn't had before said he thought it was pancakes with sausages but everyone else said it was yum. Its great to make somethig that everyone enjoyed for a change.

I love toad in the hole but recently I've found it gets a bit soggy so I thought I'd try this recipe and it was perfect. I think using a metal roasting tin makes a lot of difference. Wonderful. Thanks Sam!

Made this for dinner last Saturday and it went down so well that I'm making it again today. Perfect proportions for the batter and it cooked beautifully. I am using Lincolnshire sausages for a herby taste and setting it off with a red onion gravy. Perfect autumn-in-front-of-the-TV dinner!

My toad in the hole has never come out looking like anything other than a flipflop until now. Great recipe thanks. My husband is trying to hide his jealousy as he thinks he is the greatest dancer when it comes to yorkies, a new competition may have been born today in our house.....

Tried to make it for the first time, it was great. Didnt have an electric whisk but still worked with a hand whisk. Had with broccoli and gravy, was perfect.
