Method

  1. Halve, stone and chop the plums (about the same size as you would for an apple pie – not too big, not too small). Drop them into a large saucepan. Core, peel and chop the apples and pears in the same way. Peel, stone and chop the mango. Put all the fruit in the pan.

  2. Stir sugar, vinegar, onions, ginger, garlic, mustard seeds, coriander, crushed chillies and salt into the pan, then drop the cinnamon stick on top. Heat slowly for about 20 mins, giving an occasional stir, until the sugar has dissolved. Now leave the chutney to simmer at a steady pace, without a lid, stirring occasionally until reduced and thickened, but still with a nice balance of syrupy juice. This will take about 1½ hrs. You don’t want to cook it until all the liquid has gone, as it will thicken once it cools. Discard the cinnamon stick.

  3. Using a heatproof jug, pour the chutney while still hot into sterilised jars. It will keep for about a year in a cool, dry place.

what a lovely, simple, fuss free chutney. had been given loads of apples and plums by a neighbour and decided to do something with them right there and then - the best thing about this recipe was that i didn't have to go shopping for ingredients as i often do for chutneys and the like; i did it completely out of my store cupboard, just substitued the mango for a tin of peaches!! turned out perfectly, 4 quite big jars and one smaller one. couldn't resist keeping a little so i could try it, the smell was wonderful, and it tastes fab, even at this early stage.

I followed the recipe exactly however found it took 2 hours to reduce and I still had to remove some of the liquid. Maybe my plums had a high water content!! Apart from that it smells and seems like it will taste great.

Just finished making this chutney and put in jars the smell is brilliant it is everywhere. Will comment again once we start eating it.We stuck to the recipe.My wife would like sultanas in it maybe next time.

i made this at christmas for presents, everyone loved it!! and it went great with left over meats from christmas day and cheese

I made this chutney a few years ago and it is fantastic, you do need an awful lot of fruit for it so probably best to try when the fruit is in season so it will be cheaper to make but it really is worth making. Especially good in a cheese sandwich!!

made this chutney last month - easy peasy & bottled. Just had my first taste this lunch time - its delicious!!! Takes time to chop everything up but really worth the effort (have something good on the radio) - great colour and just the right thickness. Definitely one to make again!!!
