  • 500g white bread mix (we used Wright's)

  • 350g icing sugar
  • sprinkles (plus food colouring, if you like)


  1. Pulse together the bread mix and sugar in a food processor or table-top mixer. While the motor is running, add the egg and about 250-300ml lukewarm water, until a soft dough is formed. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth, about 5-10 mins. Leave in an oiled bowl, covered with oiled cling film, in a warm place until doubled in size – about 1 hr.

  2. Knock back dough by squashing with your fist, and divide into 20 even-sized pieces – keep covered with a clean tea towel so they don’t dry out. Shape each into a sausage and place on an oiled baking tray. Cover with oiled cling film and rise until doubled in size again.

  3. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Remove film and cook buns on top shelf for 8-10 mins, until golden. Cool on a wire rack. To decorate, mix icing sugar with a little water until stiff but spreadable – add food colouring, if you like. Dip in the top of each bun and scatter with sprinkles.

these are brilliant! really easy to make and turned out great! only reason they didnt get 5 stars was they were a bit heavier than i expected. i made them in the evening and my little boy had great fun decorating them the next day and he loved eating them to! Will definately make again!

Made these today, used hovis whiite bread mix as that's what I had in. Used fondant icing sugar to make the icing. Buns were lovely and my daughter, who is an iced bun fan, liked them better then the baker's.

I used strong white flour and some sugar, butter and milk. Very sticky, but once kneaded with some extra flour, the dough was managable. I live in a house without central heating, so proving was a bit tricky, but once risen, and baked ... WOW really tasty buns. And I haven't even iced them yet! Kids can do that tomorrow :)

This dough was so sticky I swore I wouldn't make it again........Until I ate one! Very tasty, much better than the bakery ones. I made the dough in the bread machine. I tried it again but scooped the dough into a medium silicone roasting tray rose it, baked it at 170 instead of 180 for approximately an extra 10 minutes. Cut into 12 squares and iced. Yummy and no sticky fingers!

Try slicing in half and putting jam and fresh cream inside. So so good but not for the waist line??

Made these today... Throw them away ,,,, had a problem with icing sugar as it had a chemical taste ... Don't know why but a shame really

still they need to make it easy and put ingredients up the top and actually put the ingredients other than thatg i loved them :)

I made this with my 8 year old daughter and she loved it - very simple to bake with kids and she got very creative with the decorating

Just made this for the first time, I used the Wright's white bread mix. They are really good although tougher then the usual iced buns you buy from the shops. Thats probably because they have less rubbish in them! Really tasty and relatively easy to make. The dough is sticky and the icing sugar is too much but will be making them again.

I have made this recipe up again. This time I divided the mixture into 12 round rolls instead. After I used the doughnut filling nozzle from our cheap icing kit to fill the buns with homemade stewed apples. I then iced as above (but left out the sprinkles). They were another fantastic version of an old favorite!
