  • 6 rashers smoked streaky bacon

  1. Put the oil, onions, carrots and celery in a large saucepan, and cook for about 10 mins to soften.

  2. Stir in the lentils and pour in the stock. Bring to the boil, then turn down and simmer for 30-35 mins or until the lentils are soft, topping up with water if the mixture begins to dry out. Pop in the spinach and cook for a few mins more, until wilted. Blitz the soup until smooth, then stir through the cream and season. Keep the soup warm over a low heat.

  3. Heat a little oil in a non-stick pan over a medium heat. Add the bacon and fry until crisp and golden. Ladle the soup into bowls, drizzle with a little cream and crumble over the crispy bacon.

As others made a few adjustments to the provided recipe. To provide more fibre used 50/50 mix of brown and green lentils increasing amount to 180g in total Additionally added a clove of garlic and a good pinch of cayenne pepper along with a good grind of salt and pepper If avail a good slice of rustic bread blended into the soup makes it a good winter warmer

I would give this 4 stars as it needed rescuing from being too bland. After tasting I read other comments and found the addition of a splash of wine, some nutmeg, squeeze of lemon and another veg stock pot made a massive difference resulting in a tasty soup. (And some petit pois)

Good, tasty soup. I didn't add the cream because it had to be dairy free, but the crispy bacon bits on top changed it from being a rather ordinary vegetable soup to a meal in itself.

Really disappointed by this soup, it has NO flavour at all! I seasoned it heavily, added more stock powder and put in a generous splash of Worcestershire sauce- all to no avail. I did omit the bacon and cream, as I didn't have any- but other commenters had done this and said it was tasty. Maybe I will add some garlic and nutmeg to the rest of the batch to try and rescue it.

I was looking for something to use up a whole bag of spinach that was about to go past it's best, and this was a great find. It's very VERY green, the kids have decided it's "frog soup", however they've come back for seconds. I didn't use cream or bacon as I had neither, but I did add some nutmeg after trying it without and it compliments it brilliantly. I automatically used 2 garlic cloves for the base, before I realised they weren't in the recipe, oops!

Very tasty soup. I used cream cheese instead of cream, which worked very nicely and meant I didn't need to season with salt. And I didn't have any bacon so topped it with a little bit of blue cheese. Next time I think I'd add another couple of cloves of garlic at the beginning.

This was a delicious soup which will definitely be cooked on a regular basis from now on! I made a few tweaks though, left out the bacon, swapped double cream for single, added a squeeze of lemon (before the cream) and a small glass of white wine. So yum!

This is fab! Went vegan and omitted both the cream and the bacon but still delicious - great to make a batch and have for lunch during the week.

This is a silly question but for my own peace of mind are the nutritional content amounts (calories, fat, carbs etc) on the bbc good food recipes per portion or for the whole recipie?
