  1. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Grease and line the base of a loaf tin (8 x 21cm/ 2lb) with baking parchment. Beat the butter, sugar, eggs and flour together in a large bowl with an electric whisk or in a food processor until lump free.

  2. Split the mixture into two bowls, beat the milk, followed by the cocoa powder into one. Beat the orange juice, zest and orange food colouring, if using, into the other.

  3. Spoon alternate dollops of the mixture into the cake tin, then use a skewer to create a marble pattern by dragging it through the mixture in swirls. Make sure you don’t overmix or you won’t see the pattern. Smooth the surface if necessary.

  4. Bake the cake for 45 - 55 mins until golden and risen, and a skewer poked in comes out clean.

  5. Leave the cake in the tin to cool, then turn out. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over barely simmering water or gently in the microwave. Use a spoon to drizzle the chocolate over the cake.

I made this yesterday and my family loved it. The marble effect was brilliant. It was so yummy it's all gone now! I had to bake it for 70 minutes in the end but it was worth the wait. I will definitely make this again.

I made this earlier to use up a slightly sorry looking orange. It took longer than the stated cooking time in my oven, but that might be because I chopped up half a bar of chocolate and added that to the chocolate half. It's nice, it could do with a slightly larger orange hit. Next time I might top it with an orange drizzle.

Made this for work colleagues, it turned out great! I used a round cake tin and it took less time to cook (about 35mins) and it was a great consistency and tasted great too, the orange flavour worked really well. Great recipe, can recommend it!

I think it is a great cake, I'll do, I'm sure. But it doesn't need baking powder? I think so...

Not made this particular cake but I have a recipe for an amazing (at least I think so!) chocolate orange marble cake on my blog below. I've found cocoa powder can make marble cakes really dry, so I add some oil to the batter to compensate and then seep an orange drizzle into the baked cake to make it really moist. A chocolate ganache is then poured over it all, just for extra decadence! It's SO good!

Very nice maybe a bit too buttery for my liking. I omitted the orange flavour and just used plain dark choc for topping. All in all, thumbs up!
