Method

  1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line a 24 x 20cm brownie tin with baking parchment. Put the butter, dark chocolate and orange zest in a non-stick saucepan and very gently melt over a low heat, stirring every now and then, until smooth – take care not to overheat it. Cool.

  2. Whisk the eggs and sugar together with an electric whisk until the mixture is pale, has doubled in volume and leaves a trail when the beaters are lifted. Gently stir into the cooled chocolate mixture. Sift over the flour and cocoa, stir in, then add the orange chocolate.

  3. Pour into the lined tin and bake for 35-40 mins. Cool in the tin, then cut into squares.

I made the recipe to the word. My partner took the remainder of what he didn't eat to work and came home with orders to make more. Members of his staff are Muslim and it was Ramadan and they could not share with what their workmates were enjoying. So, now that Ramadan is over I have an order to make more. Geoffers

I have just made these but using organic sugar instead of caster. I bought good chocolate and good cocoa then when I went to put the chocolate orange in, not only wasn't it dark chocolate but it was mint!! And a few days out of date. I decided to go with it after all the effort of making the recipe up to that point It turned out great. I still want to try it with dark chocolate orange though as I love chocolate orange anything. I didn't have the correct pan size but it didn't matter. Mine was 23 x 23 I think and it was done in about 35 mins.

I Made this cake for a bbq and it went down extremely well. I used the zes of a full orange and orange juice as opposed to orange chocolate - it was lovely. Will be making it again.

I had a go at this recipe recently with a bit of assistance from my two year old in preparation for 'cake day' at work to celebrate my birthday. Long gone are the days of dropping into the supermarket to pick up something ready made, birthdays are now a chance to show off baking prowess! Not my strong point usually being more of a savoury cook, but this was a real winner! Having never made brownies before (but eaten enough to know what I like) I was really pleased with the outcome. Subtle orange tang and that lovely rich chocolate gooey centre we all love. These were a real crowd pleaser, people are still talking about them 2 weeks later! My little one enjoyed helping to break up the chocolate pieces and sprinking in the chocolate orange too. Yum!!
