  • 4 ripe bananas

  • 2 x 32g bag chocolate buttons
  • vanilla ice cream, to serve


  1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 (or a BBQ). Make a slit through the skin of the bananas along one side – making sure you don’t cut all the way through to the other side. Poke in the chocolate buttons along the cut. Put each banana onto a sheet of foil and crimp the edges together to seal into a parcel. Transfer to a baking sheet and cook for 25 mins until the bananas have turned black (or pop straight into the BBQ embers for 15 mins).

  2. Serve with a scoop of ice cream and any melted chocolate that has escaped!

Subbed in 70% dark chocolate and a sprinkle of cinnamon for chocolate buttons and cooked at 180 without foil for 15 mintues and it turned out great!

add a little bit of peanut butter and mini marshmallows (as suggested above).

I've made these so many times over the years, great for kids and big kids too. Any chocolate works. Try mixing white and plain chocolate together for a change. I always serve with vanilla ice cream and any sauces.

We didn't really enjoy this dish. It may work better with riper bananas, but we found the bananas had an odd taste. We tried it with marshmallows and chocolate buttons, as suggested in the variation- but the marshmallows melted away to a clear syrupy liquid. This wasn't what I was expecting at all and I won't be making it again. Disappointing.

I think that bananas are 'supernutritious' look at wikipedia the number of trace elements and minerals is astounding that is why tennis players tend to eat them all the time, but diabetics shouldn't be shy of eating a balanced diet which includes such nutritious food. However for those who are not diabetic the addition of 90% cocoa dark choc pieces instead of choc buttons - perhaps this recipe would be improved nutritionally. I am going to use this recipe for our family barbie this weekend, anything that encourages our youngsters to eat fruit has good to be 'super'!! and its the kind of recipe that children can make enjoy making with supervision and enjoy eating!!

It isn't superhealthy, but it does count as one of your 5 a day which is a plus...making it even more unhealthy, but just as yummy is to use chopped up mars bars instead of the chocolate- it works really well!!!

I agree with ladylotty. It is very misleading to tout this dessert as 'superhealthy' and I am very dubious about the calorie content specified as bananas of the size displayed tend to have that number of calories without the addition of chocolate! Nevertheless it is a delicious treat and one I greatly enjoy!

Delicious and easy to make. Great pud for a BBQ and low in fat too so good for weight watchers. Works well with chocolate flake also.
