  • 400g can chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tsp vegetable stock powder or ½ crumbled stock cube
  • 1 tbsp tomato purée
  • 1 tsp sugar

Method

  1. Heat the oil in a pan, add the garlic, then gently fry for 1 min.

  2. Tip in all the other ingredients, except the basil, then bring to the boil.

  3. Reduce the heat, then simmer uncovered for 5 mins, stirring occasionally.

  4. To finish, tear the basil leaves, then stir into the sauce.

Brilliant recipe- incredibly quick and easy, and very tasty! It uses store cupboard ingredients as well, very handy when I'm running low on food and need to whip up a quick meal. I usually add some shredded chicken or bacon as well for the protein

I am a complete novice cook, and although I should have maybe prepped the ingredients before putting the pasta on (I got a bit flustered) it was super, super easy and really delicious. I stirred the torn up basil leaves through the sauce while it was still over the heat, and had it with wholegrain pasta and king prawns - absolutely great :)

I made this with spaghetti and meatballs. Delicious. So easy too and much healthier than shop bought bottled sauce.

I make this now about once a month and freeze small portions of it. My son loves it on pasta and pasta pockets and always asks for it.

Lovely. Ony added half the amount of sugar (a pinch, really) as I like the sharpness of the tomatoes. Ready in 5. Delish.

I really like this recipe, because it is so quick and I usually have the ingredients in my cupboard (except the fresh basil). It is versatile too, I like to use italian herbs or cayenne pepper. We prefer to blend the sauce after cooking, just a few pulses with a stick blender and our son likes it too.

This turned out really well, my wife doesn't usually like tomato based sauces but she gave it a try and to my surprise she loved it. I put in one small onion sliced plus a red pepper sliced with the garlic at the start. I also used a 400g tin of chopped tomatoes with herbs.....they sell this in the supermarkets......a bit more expensive than the usual can of straight chopped tomatoes but it really did add to the taste I think. This will now be my choice for tomato sauce......and it's so easy and quick to make. Just brilliant.

Lovely, and good to make in batches when I have basil in. Good for all sorts of dishes and kids seem to like it too

Lovely sauce and easy to make. The kids liked it which makes it universally useful for us with various pasta dishes. Now I've made a sample I'll make a batch next time!

Its says 52 calories per portion but is a portion the full 350ml?

Gently fry two chopped shallots at the beginning, add half a red chilli with the garlic and stir in dried basil if you haven't got fresh. This will add a further depth and dimension to the flavour, should you want it.
