  1. Cook the potatoes in a large pan of water for 15 mins or until soft. Drain well. Place the pan back on the heat. Melt a little butter and cook the garlic for 1 min to soften, then stir in the cream or milk and heat through. Return the potatoes to the pan and mash until smooth.

  2. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Spoon the mixture into a 20 x 30cm baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs, cheese and thyme over the top. Can be made up to this point the day before and stored in the fridge or frozen for up to 1 month. Cook for 15 mins until the crumbs are crisp and the cheese has melted. To cook from frozen, simply cook for 1 hr 10 mins.

Cooked this for something different instead of plain mashed potato and it was so delicious even my picky son enjoyed it great side dish

This dish was very well received by my family and I will definitely be making it again! After reading the other comments I used 2 cloves of garlic and increased the amount of cheese, which worked very well and I will do the same again.

Absolutely yummy. Followed recipe to the letter, which is usual for me. Definitely one to make again and great that can be prepared hours in advance.

I used this as the topping of a chicken bake that i created from this mash recipe and also the flambeed chicken recipe on here. I changed it slightly and roasted 4 coves of garlic, then mashed to a pulp with rock salt and peppercorns which i then dded to the mash. I used grannary breadcrumbs and lots of vintage cheddar and place under th grill for 5 mins once assembled with the flambeed chicken. Absolutely delicious and has becom a regular favourite in my household.

A lovely twist on boring mashed potato. I served it with steak and fried onions but it could be served with almost anything. There was plenty left over (as there is only two of us) so I have frozen the rest ready for next time (which I’ll probably serve with bacon wrapped chicken). A great recipe to have when you fancy something a bit different.

Beautiful - best Mash by far! Halved the potato quantity but failed to remember to halve the rest of the ingredients- which resulted in the creamiest, most amazing mash!!

we were really disappointed by this. we love garlic and we love mash but this was somehow less than the sum of its parts. i would rather have had a big pile of creamy mashed potato made with just some butter and plenty of black pepper. plus i think that just one clove of garlic does not a garlic mash potato bake make...
