  • 8 large sausages (course-cut ones like Toulouse or Cumberland are ideal)
  • ¼ quantity tomato sauce (see 'Goes well with')
  • 3 x 400g/14oz cans butter beans
  • 1 tbsp black treacle or muscovado sugar
  • 1 tsp English mustard

  1. In a large casserole, fry the sausages until brown all over – about 10 mins.

  2. Add the tomato sauce, stirring well, then stir in the beans, treacle or sugar and mustard. Bring to the simmer, cover and cook for 30 mins. Great served with crusty bread or rice.

This one went down a storm in our house. Very easy to make and delicious, great to come home to on a cold night. Used 20 sausages and scaled up everything else so had several portions to put in freezer. Served with rice. A winner!

Added onions and red lentils to bulk it up. Lovely! is it wrong to eat it all by yourself? lol

I made a quick sauce with a 400g carton of chopped tomatoes, bay leaf and oregano. Used 1.5 large tins of beans: a mixture of cannellini and kidney beans. Great!
