Method

  1. Cut each onion into eight wedges. Roughly chop the carrots and cut the potatoes into large chunks. Put the kettle on.

  2. Heat a large non-stick pan, add the mince and fry quickly, stirring all the time, until evenly browned. Crumble in the stock cubes and mix well. Add the prepared vegetables, stir them around, then pour in 900ml/11⁄2 pints of hot water from the kettle. Bring to the boil.

  3. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 25-30 minutes, until the veg are tender. Stir in the baked beans and a generous splash of Worcestershire sauce and heat through. Taste and add salt and pepper if necessary.

  4. Scatter over the parsley, then ladle the hotpot into bowls. Put the Worcestershire sauce bottle on the table in case anyone fancies a bit more spice.

Made this and the 'Easy White Bread' on my day off today, they went lovely together. A great mid week meal and enough left over to put in the freezer for an after work nourishing meal.Lovely tender chunky veg and the beans were an unusual but tasty addition.

Made this in the slow-cooker the day before the weekly shop. Used beef stock from a pot-roast earlier in the week, and did not have enough spuds, so added the last half of a butternut squash as well. We also added a little chilli powder to make it a bit spicier and thickened with cornflour. My husband and kids wolfed it down, so will definitely be making again - cheap & easy, stick in the slow cooker and forget!

So quick and easy, yet tastes good and comforting. My only criticism is the consistency - a little too watery. Little bit of Beurre Manié does the trick though.

Probably the worst thing I've ever made. It is really unpleasant. I used good mince but it's just pretty unlikeable after the first bowl. If but for the meat content, one would consider it a rather nasty gruel. I think it needs better meat, possibly stewing steak.

Made this midweek and was gobsmacked by the reception it got! Never before has my ten-year-old daughter returned to the pan (huge, it makes loads) for a second helping of any stew-type dish and the whole family loved it. I did modify it a bit, I couldn't stop myself frying the onions, added some finely chopped celery and swede, a bay leaf and a bit of tomato puree. I also found it needed a bit more liquid stock to beef up the flavour a bit. Perfect with lots of crusty bread and really easy to make. A definite regular from now on and I am thinking of adding baked beans to everything in future as my daughter insists that's what makes it superior!

Very easy prep. Will become a standard in our house. Think the sauce could be tweaked with a smidge of English mustard. One of these nice dishes you can almost busk, never the same twice but always tasty. Play with the quantities and it can be very economical. Would be great for children to get involved.
