  • marmite
  • bread (warburtons seeded batch preferably)
  • butter
  • bay leaf (optional)


    1. put bread in toaster
    2. get out butter and marmite
    3. get toast out of toaster when done
    4. spread butter on toast
    5. spread marmite on toast
    6. serve with bay leaf (optional)
    7. eat it

Very good recipe but I found it to be a bit time consuming so I tried a microwave version to speed things up, but this was not as good as using a toaster and proved to be extremely messy plus. Has anyone tried to make it in Breville sandwich toaster?

At first this was a bit challenging, but I am now very comfortable with this recipe. It is great for when the mother in law visits, she will think you slaved over it for hours and know that her son is in good hands and won't go hungry. Thank you again!

Do you know if this can be frozen? It would be great to know that this delicious, nutritious and wholesome meal was just a reheat away after a hard day's work.

I have recently been experimenting with classic French cuisine and was looking for more of a challenge, needless to say I was excited to come across this recipe. I replaced the bread with new season asparagus tips and 'toasted' them using a cigarette lighter (this took longer than expected). As I hate marmite, I made a hollandaise sauce using yolks from fresh duck eggs. To top it off, I used a few shavings of truffle as I find bay leaves to be too expensive. The finished article was delicious, although it did fall short of the massive expectations I had for it. Just a side note, I think food of this nature is best enjoyed whilst sat outdoors, naked. Thank you very much for this recipe.

I'm tempted by this, but it looks a little beyond my skill. Could the bread be replaced by, say, ham?

I am a teacher at a secondary school and was looking for a simple recipe to do with my year 9 students when I stumbled across this recipe. It looked simple enough but my students really struggled. We only have 1 hour lessons and what with the preparation time, tidying up and putting them into containers, we were so late for the next lesson I got a written warning from the principal. This is clearly a recipe only for the experienced chef - approach with care...

Only 2 stars. This recipe isn't really sustaining enough for a large family so I made 4 portions, sprinkled the finished dish with curry powder and served with "half-and-half" chips and rice, poppadoms & mango chutney.. and it met with a surprisingly luke warm response. I'd be interested to see what Nigella makes of this. Personally I really don't think it's worth all these rave reviews.
