  1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line a 20cm square brownie tin with baking parchment. Beat the butter and sugar together with an electric whisk, then add the eggs one by one. Sift in the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder, and add the milk. Mix everything together, then stir in the chocolate chips. Spoon into the tin and level the top.

  2. Bake for 30 mins, or until the top is set, then cool completely. To make the topping, melt the milk chocolate, cool a little, then mix it with the soft cheese. Spread over the cooled brownies and cut into small squares – these are very rich.

Made these yesterday, first time I've ever found a recipe myself and made it all on my own, and they were perfect! Even my dad liked them, and he usually always has a criticism when I try and make something, so that shows how wonderful this recipe is. Makes gorgeous brownies, even though I didn't add the topping, thank you Alex :)

I personally think these Brownie's are excellent, well done Alex! They use less butter and less chocolate than some other recipes but the result is great, moist and very chocolately. I didn't put the icing on top, just a Smartie as gooseberrycrumble suggested and they look great. When I make them again I think I will try adding some chopped walnuts.... Easy to make, give them a go.

Yet to taste them myself but apparently they're yummy! Cut them into 20. Would look nice with a Smartie on each one, I think!

Brilliant recipe, which everyone loves. I added the finely grated zest of an orange to the cake mix and instead of milk chocolate for the icing, I used chocolate orange segments.
