Freestyle skier James Woods narrowly missed out on a place on the podium at the 2018 Winter Olympics. We talked to him about his training diet, favourite foods and hydration...
Just before the 2018 Winter Olympics, where he came very close to getting a medal, James “Woodsy” Woods, 26, won the first ski slopestyle World Cup event of the season. Aged just 14, he dedicated his life to the sport and, to date, he has collected three World Cup wins, two New Zealand Freeski Open wins and two bronze medals at the Winter X Games Europe. In January 2017 he took gold at the Big Air competition at the Winter X Games XXI. Here he shares his top diet and exercise tips.
Five things you didn't know about James Woods...
1. His diet is focused around plant-based foods.
James is meticulous about nourishing his body in order to maintain the strength needed to compete in his sport. He explains: “I try to think about hitting everything from a vegan diet first, and then I hit all my meats, lots of fish, milk, eggs, in their perfect quantity, almost as if they were a pill. I enjoy eating them, but I just don’t want to exceed how much I need. I’m also stuffing my face full of vegetables all day long – rice, grains, nuts, all that business.”
2. His favourite dinner is vegetable curry
Eating healthily doesn’t mean James compromises on taste. “I’m all about curry,” he says. “It’s usually vegetable curry, but with spices and everything going on there. Yeah, whatever, boom – throw it all in!” James isn’t shy about experimenting with flavor, either. In fact, he is partial to some very unique food combinations. “My mum always used to do me spaghetti with peanut butter on it, which is lovely,” he explains. “Oh, and I like strawberry jam on bread with cheese. It is a bit strange, isn’t it? But, to me, cheese is just like thick butter.”
3. His ideal sport involves hurtling through the air
As if bombing downhill on a pair of skis wasn’t enough, James gets his kicks from all kinds of sports – but especially those that involve plenty of adrenaline and flying through the air at top speeds. “I love everything. I like surfing, I like skydiving. Yeah, chuck me out of something!” he says.
4. He struggles to get out of bed just like us!
Even pro skiers have their off days, but James’s burning ambition gets him up and out of bed whatever the weather. “Sometimes it’s freezing and you do not want to leave the house and that’s completely fine,” he says. “But if you’ve got that goal and that ambition and you know why you want to do this – that’s going to help you get out the door.”
5. He starts every day the same way
James’s day starts with hydration, which he swears by in order to perform to his maximum ability. He explains: “I start every single day by getting out of bed and chugging a big bottle of water. That bump starts you into the day and keeps you motivated to stay hydrated, because it’s an ongoing process. Stay hydrated – it’s just really important.”
