It’s easier than you think to make fluffy crumpets, and mum will really appreciate you making them from scratch. The batter calls for easy-to-find ingredients and you only have to let the yeast do its work for about an hour. Serve with ricotta, berries and a little honey.

If mum would prefer a lighter start to the day, try making her this healthy vegetarian shakshuka recipe. It’s packed with peppers, red onion, spinach and cherry tomatoes, and comes flavoured with three different spices. Delicious with toasted sourdough, for dipping.
10. Full English frittata
