Rooted in heritage
Founded in 1960 by Susan Williams-Ellis, daughter of the architect and creator of Portmeirion Village, Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion has built a worldwide reputation for crafting high-quality, innovative tableware and homeware.
Its story began when Susan’s father asked her to create some ceramic gifts for the shop at Portmeirion Village in North Wales. The opportunity sparked a passion for ceramics in Susan and her husband, Euan, and helped lay the foundations for the Portmeirion brand.
Then, in 1972, came one of its most recognisable designs: Botanic Garden. Inspired by a chance discovery of antique botanical books, the collection featured a variety of individual floral illustrations and captured a growing appetite for more relaxed, informal dining. It quickly became a classic British design and remains one of Portmeirion’s best-known collections today.
