Top tips for protecting teeth from acid erosion

When drinking acidic drinks like fruit juice or anything fizzy, use a straw angled towards the back of the mouth away from teeth.

Avoid brushing your teeth straight after consuming acidic food or drinks when enamel is at its softest. Either wait as long as possible, or brush beforehand.

Drink water after eating or drinking anything acidic to help wash the acid away, or chew sugar-free gum to stimulate the production of saliva, which can also neutralise the acid.

After an acidic meal try eating some enamel-friendly foods like cheese or nuts, to help restore the pH balance in your mouth.

Visit your dentist regularly. Only a dental professional can diagnose acid erosion.

Use Sensodyne Pronamel toothpaste. Designed to help protect teeth from acid erosion, it has the benefits of regular toothpaste but also helps to re-harden tooth enamel, is pH neutral and has low abrasivity to help reduce enamel wear while brushing, as well as being specially formulated for people with sensitive teeth.

Brush teeth gently but thoroughly with a medium-soft toothbrush like the Sensodyne Pronamel toothbrush. It has soft microfine bristles to help minimise the abrasion of enamel. The small head can reach those awkward places and microfine rounded bristles allow you to clean round teeth and gums.
