A healthy and balanced diet can help keep the family smiling brightly, combined with regular use of Sensodyne Pronamel, which can help protect against the effects of acid erosion.
Now that grocery stores are brimming with all that delicious seasonal fruit and veg, it’s a great time to start preparing your winter menus. There’s so much to choose from, with piles of mushrooms, sweet cobs of corn, English peppers, beetroot, tomatoes, juicy apples, root vegetables, as well as duck and partridge, smoked haddock, seabass and more, all waiting to be taken home and enjoyed. In fact, with so much variety available, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to eating well. But you may be unaware that among all that goodness, some of it may not be so good for your teeth, due to its acidity.
Fruit teas and salad vinaigrettes, for example, are acidic foods. Acid erosion occurs when acids found in our diet temporarily soften the tooth’s hard enamel surface, lessening its mineral content. Over time, and combined with abrasive toothbrushing, the enamel can be worn away and gradually becomes thinner. In turn, teeth can become more sensitive and the appearance of your teeth can also change, maybe becoming darker yellow or with a rounded look on the surface of the tooth.
Considering acid erosion damage is permanent, protection is the best policy. Fortunately, simple steps can be taken to help reduce the risk of acid erosion when you eat or drink. For example, drinking water after consuming acidic foods or drinks, or finishing off a meal with cheese, can help counter the effects of acidic foods – as can using a gentle, neutral pH toothpaste such as Sensodyne Pronamel.
