Method

  1. Brown the mince in a non-stick pan for a few mins, then tip into a bowl. Whizz the onions in a food processor until finely chopped (or roughly grate if you don't have one). Tip into the pan with the oil, then cook for 2-3 mins until soft. Add the spices, cook for 1 min. Return the mince to the pan with the tomatoes and stock, then bring to a boil. Simmer for 20 mins.
  2. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6 and spoon the mince into an ovenproof dish. Arrange the baguette slices over the mince, then bake for 12 mins until the bread is crisp on top.

All-American Sloppy Joes

Cook the mince and onion as before, then mix in 4 tbsp barbecue sauce instead of the spices. Add a 400g can kidney beans, drained, with the tomatoes and stock, then simmer as recipe, left. Serve spooned over 4 halved burger buns, scattered with a little grated cheddar, if you like.

very easy, made it yesterday for lunch - I have added 1/2 can of red kidneys, and some chili flakes + some cayenne pepper for some kick, also some smoked paprika (gave it that smokiness - mm, lovely!).

Great success - the kids loved it. Easy Saturday tea. I added the kidney beans as suggested in GOOD FOOD mag which bulked it out. The garlic bread was nice and squidgy and am tempted to add a few chilli flakes instead of powder next time to spice it up a little more. Definitely going to do this again whatever.

Went down really well with my boyfriend and our daughter, added harricot beans and barbeque sauce instead of the cumin as suggested in GF magazine and a spash of red wine too. Good to have something different to do with mince.

It was a bit watery so I simmered it for a bit longer. Easy and tasty. However, the garlic bread went a bit soggy on the bottom.

Didn't add most of the stock as my onions were quiet watery when whizzed. Mine did not look as red as the picture so not sure what I did or didn't do here! Yummy and easy to make and a great hit with the kids -think I would add mushrooms next time.

Flavourless!! I had to add a load of extra ingredients to make it passable. I won't bother with this one again, although I might use the idea of garlic bread on top for other recipes.

Was perfect for a dinner mid week that I had to rush to buy ingredients for. Was easy to make and very much appreciated by the four men it had to feed.

I made this and found it great and very easy to make, it had loads of flavour. I made my own baggettes, which went together nicely. I will make again.

I have made this a couple of times now, with the bbq sauce instead of the spices and we love it. Easy to make with plenty left over to freeze for another quick and easy meal later on in the month.

I made some tweaks to this recipe, including adding finely minced carrots and celery, then baked in the oven with less stock, was a hit with family, is a nice idea with the bread on :)

Very simple to prepare and cook. Nice easy dinner for the whole family and extremely tasty. The garlic bread really adds to the flabour. I'm looking forward to trying the American twist.

My family loved this recipe and it will become a favourite. I've tried it with kidney beans and also with sliced cooked new potatoes added to the meat mixture. Both times I've sprinkled grated cheese over the top of the garlic bread slices which is delicious.
