  • 200g unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 85g light muscovado sugar
  • 85g golden caster sugar
  • 1 egg

  • 225g self-raising flour
  • 50g plain chocolate, 50-70% cocoa, roughly chopped
  • 50g white chocolate, roughly chopped
  • 85g natural colour glacé cherry, roughly chopped


  1. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Beat the butter, sugars and egg until smooth, then mix in the flour, chocolates and cherry pieces and ½ tsp salt. Spoon onto non-stick baking sheets in large rough blobs – you’ll get 20 out of this mix. Make sure they are well spaced as the cookies grow substantially as they bake. The raw dough can be frozen.

  2. Bake for 12-14 mins until just golden, but still quite pale and soft in the middle. If baking from frozen, give them a few mins more. Cool on the sheets for 5 mins, then lift onto racks with a fish slice and leave to cool completely.

Amazing recipe! They turned out perfect! I didn't add cherries. Instead I did 100g milk chocolate chips and almost 100g of white chocolate chips (a handful ended up getting eaten by myself whilst beating the mix). Will definitely bake again :)

I make these with chocolate and hazelnuts and they are absolutely fantastic. Much nicer that ones you can buy. Really easy as well.

Light, crispy and chewy cookies! I added dried cranberries and smarties which worked well. I this is a versatile basic cookie recipe if you want to play around with different additions.

I made these cookies for my 3-year-old son, so wanted to add some 'feel good' things in them. So I rate them 5 stars, but based on my adaptations on the basic recipe:
150 g butter
50 g peanut butter
125 g self-raising flour
50 g ground oats
50 g ground almond
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
100 g milk chocolate, chopped
The remaining ingredients were the same, but baking time (fan oven) was much shorter than recommended, around 9 minutes with brown edges and not a gooey center.
Still, highly recommend them, easy and delicious.

These work well also with 100g porridge oats (leave out 100g flour), toasted hazelnuts, raisins, cinnamon and fudge pieces, instead of the chocolate and cherries. They only needed 7 minutes cooking in my fan oven. Lovely and chewy.

When I made these they tasted good but came out like flat cakes. I have no idea where I went wrong. Any suggestions?

Normally when a cake is too flat it means too much sugar is added

Really easy to do, kids and adults love them. I don't like cherries so I throw smarties in instead.
Only down side is they soon get eaten :-)

Oops my question didn't appear - these were wonderful the first couple of times I made them but this time were cakey and not chewy. Can anyone advise me on where I could have gone wrong?

I have made these before and they were wonderful and chewy - this time they came out rather cakey. Someone on a previous post had this experience. Does anyone know what could have caused this (double checked ingredients).

Wow . . . these are absolutely delicious! I used cranberries and milk chocolate drops as that is what I had in. Larger chunks of chocolate would be even better, and I'm already planning to try adding almond, hazel nuts, lemon, sour cherries, etc, etc, etc!
