Method

  1. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Put the apples into a saucepan with a splash of water, cover, then cook over a high heat for 4-5 mins, stirring now and then until just soft. Stir in 3 tbsp of the caramel, then tip into small ovenproof dishes. Dot small spoonfuls of caramel cream over the apples until only 1 tbsp is left.

  2. Mix the flour and oats together, then rub in the butter with your fingers until you have a crumbly mixture. Stir in the remaining caramel, then scatter over the apples. Bake for 18-20 mins until golden and crisp on top.

Definitely very glad I added more crumble, but I absolutely loved it despite this! I love twists on traditional dishes and this was definitely it! Fantastic comfort food on a cold/wet day!

This is a really nice crumble and very easy to make. Downside was that it took over an hour to make! I cooked the apples for approx. 10 mins until soft but still in shape. I also doubled the crumble mixture and just made one large dish which was easily enough for 6-8 people. A sprinkle of brown sugar over the crumble before baking is a must!!

Wish I'd read the comments about doubling the crumble! There wasn't enough and it wasn't very crumbly. However, it did taste good and with custard was enough for 7. Odd number I know but that's how many I feed on a Sunday teatime!

Loved this and cooked it in mini pots smaller than the above, so had just about enough topping!

Used cooking apples so not so sweet, but agree with Daz in that there was insufficient crumble to cover the apples (and we only used 6 apples not 8!) maybe double the crumble mixture?

I don't know if anyone else found this, but the crumble topping only covered a fraction of the apples! I would've needed at least double to cover them all. Luckily we had some pre-made crumble topping from a previous shop in the cupboard!

My family loved this recipe- though the first time I made it, I used cooking apples as well as 1 granny smith one, which gave it a nice flavour.

The second time I made it I used eating apples but substituted the caramel for a splash of maple syrup, which kept it from being too sweet, just right!

This dish was ok but next time I probably wont use the caramel sauce. I also sprinkled a bit of cinamon on top for extra flavour.

I had bought the caramel sauce but after Fiona's remarks about being too sweet, it put me off so used 7 eating apples and one cooking apple and didn't add any sweetener at all to these, but added a squeeze of caramel to the topping. It turned out really well, so if you like to taste the fruit I would suggest not using the sauce. Served with custard.

Didn't really enjoy this, found it much too sweet, I will try it again with cooking apples to see if it makes it any better.

Yummy yummy! My family loved this easy twist on apple crumble. I substituted cooking apples which was fine and I think probably a little less sweet which compensated for the caramel!

Due to comments on the sweetness of this dish I used cooking apples instead - adding a little lemon juice to prevent discolouration! BIG mistake - on adding the caramel the whole thing curdled and had to throw it away! I can only assume that it was the lemon juice that caused this!
