  for people who want a step by step explanation, there is a video on you tube where a girl (i think she's british) shows everything step by step and i found it very useful. just search it there and you'll find it. (the video is a little dark but the steps are made very clear) other than that, this is an awesome cupcake design!

  I'm sorry this wasn't terribly clear, I was making it up as I went along so it was a bit hard to try and write it down step by step. Firstly, the cupcakes are the base (these are cookie monster cupcakes after all). I mentioned the recipe I always use, but just use your own favourite recipe if you prefer. The frosting is made with 200g vegetable shortening, 2/3 cup water, 1.5kg icing sugar mixture. Place all ingredients in a mixer and beat until light and fluffy. Add blue colouring until you get the desired colour. You won't need all of it but the leftovers freeze beautifully. If you prefer to use buttercream double the standard recipe for 12 cupcakes. As I said the frosting does give you a better colour.

  (had to enter this in 2 parts!) For the coconut, put a couple of cups of coconut in a plastic bag, add colouring to 1T milk, pour onto the coconut and then rub vigorously until you get a colour similar to the frosting. Rubbing the coconut really helps the colouring sink in and stops it looking patchy. It takes a bit of effort to get a good colour but its worth the end result. Use an icecream scoop to put a nice dome of frosting on the top of the cupcake then cover with the coconut, press it lightly all over to make sure the it sticks (be generous with the coconut). Then follow the steps above. I hope this makes it a bit clearer. If you still have any more queries just ask, I'd love to help if I can. xx

  Sorry Fiona, but I cannot understand either... if I use already-made buttercream icing, how much do I have to use? Od I have to add the water also? Or only the blue colouring?

  The cupcakes are the base, you put the frosting on the top, just like icing any other cupcake. You can't see them in the photo because it was taken from above but I can assure you all that blue frosting is sitting on top of a cupcake. Sugar and Spice, I'm realy sorry but I have no idea what vegetable shortening is available in the UK. The one I use is white and is soft at room temp. If it is a problem finding one I'd just make up a buttercream - life's too short to stress! For a buttercream recipe the standard is usually 125g butter, beat until as light as possible, gradually add 250g icing sugar mixture then beat in 2T milk. I would double this because you do use quite a lot.

  I made these for a Halloween party, and they were brilliant! They are easy but time-consuming, so mine didn't look quite as tidy as Fiona's but still obvious what they were meant to be. For all those confused people, I think you're making it more complicated than it is. Just make some cupcakes (whatever kind you like), make some buttercream (or the shortening stuff), colour it blue, and chuck it on top in a round-ish shape. Then just get creative with the mouth and eyes! One tip: I first tried to use natural food colouring, but it didn't work at all, only made the buttercream pale blue, so had to throw it away, go and buy some un-natural colouring, and start again, then it worked perfectly. Everyone was very impressed!

  These are fab! I made them for an 80's themed party and they went down a storm. I watched the clip on You Tube which does help, but they are very easy to make. Although, my hands looked like a smurf for a while afterwards. Just made a vanilla cupcake base, as the topping is sweet. Did cheat slightly as bought Betty Crocker vanilla buttercream/frosting. Easy to work with. Now, I have a request to make them for a friend's daughter's 9th birthday. So yes they are popular with all ages.

  If you use marshmallows as the eyes they work better you just have to cut them in half then use black iceing for eyes they work really good and easy
