Ingredients

  • 8 good-quality pork sausages
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 carrots, finely chopped
  • 2 celery sticks, finely chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 rosemary sprigs, 1 chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
  • 175g dried green lentils, rinsed
  • 400g can chopped tomatoes
  • 700ml stock
  • 1kg potatoes, cut into chunks
  • 150ml milk

Method

  1. Fry the sausages in 1 tbsp oil in a casserole dish until brown. Remove. Tip in the carrots, celery and onion and cook for 10 mins, adding the chopped rosemary and half the garlic for the final min. Add the lentils, tomatoes and stock. Return the sausages, bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 20 mins. Remove the lid and cook for a further 10-15 mins until lentils are soft. Season.
  2. Meanwhile, boil the potatoes until tender. In another pan, heat the milk, remaining garlic and rosemary until just about to boil, then turn off heat. Drain the potatoes well.
  3. Sieve the hot milk over the rest of the potatoes and mash with the remaining oil, then season. Serve with the stew.

I made this a few nights ago and thought it was lovely. As others have said, it's a great comfort food, winter warmer. Very filling too and as I was the only one eating it, it tasted even better over the next few days. I used Richmond pork sausages and felt they were lost in the other flavours. I'm going to get some Italian sausages next time I'm at the supermarket and try those. I enjoyed the garlic mash, but thought it needed loads of seasoning and I think instead of milk, it would be nicer/richer if I made garlic butter and mashed the spuds with that instead.

Family really enjoyed this. Very filling and perfect for a cold winter night. Forgot to get lentils but didn't make a difference to the taste! I used 500ml stock and a little extra garlic, and pork apple sausages for that bit of extra flavour.

I tried making this recipe a few nights ago - although it did not turn out looking anything at all like the picture it still tasted good.

I served this with potato wedges instead of mash. Very filling and tasty meal.

Husband absolutely loved this recipe. Made in the slow cooker and added red chilli as we like a bit of spice, made garlic and rosemary mash and served it with crusty bread, a very filling and hearty meal perfect for the colder nights a real winner, we even froze the remaining sauce to have with chips or j potato it was too good to discard. Recommend this one

Made this today in the slow cooker left it all afternoon also added a chilli as husband likes spicy food it was really lovely and fulfilling. Husband even said we freeze the leftover sauce and have it at a later date with chips or j potato as he loved the sauce, a real winner.

Delicious! I used a courgette instead of celery, and dried mixed herbs instead of rosemary. It made 4 decent sized portions too. I didn't think it really needed the mash though - it was very filling. It would have gone nicely with garlic bread instead!

This was delicious. Had loads of leftover sauce, so the next day I mixed in some chopped red chilli, spinach and creme fraiche and poured it over a baked potato...Yummy.

Despite adding a fresh green chilli, and a teaspoon of paprika, we found this quite bland. We ate it...so was ok ... but nothing special. The garlic and rosemary mashed potato was lovely though!!!

This was absolutely delicious! The sauce is absolutely gorgeous, rich and full of flavour. We had it with crusty bread.

Delicious, I made with sicilian sausages left over from my brother's wedding and multiplied the recipe by one and a half. The rest will go in the freezer today.

Have cooked this twice now and both times everyone really enjoyed it, I doubled up on the ingredients because there was a lot of us (not the garlic though) and have now passed on the recipe. Excellent and easy

Even The Husband ate it - and normally lentils provoke mutiny! Did normal mash - and wish I had made the sauce more garlicky to compensate.
Good that dried green lentils don't need soaking these days - makes it all seem less of a chore.
Supermarket didn't have any Italian sausages... would imagine they'd take this up a notch - I just used decent pork ones.

My husband loved it (and he is normally the cook in the family!) mum and dad loved it so much that they asked for the recipe straight away! I added thyme and mushrooms and used goodquality cumberland sausages - also did cheesy mash instead of rosemary, it was just delicious and I would certainly make this again!
