Method

  1. Fry the sausages in 1 tbsp oil in a casserole dish until brown. Remove. Tip in the carrots, celery and onion and cook for 10 mins, adding the chopped rosemary and half the garlic for the final min. Add the lentils, tomatoes and stock. Return the sausages, bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 20 mins. Remove the lid and cook for a further 10-15 mins until lentils are soft. Season.
  2. Meanwhile, boil the potatoes until tender. In another pan, heat the milk, remaining garlic and rosemary until just about to boil, then turn off heat. Drain the potatoes well.
  3. Sieve the hot milk over the rest of the potatoes and mash with the remaining oil, then season. Serve with the stew.

This was a super easy, delicious winter warmer. I love rustic food so this was right up my street. Being a chilli addict I added some spice and it finished it off a treat. Was great with the mash but next time I'll serve with freshly made bread.

Made without the rosemary (as I didn't have any) and with normal mash and was still lovely - very filling :) Took about 5-10 minutes longer than stated for the lentils to go soft but other than that it's a great recipe.

i made this as party food for my students - i cooked the sausages and lentils in a big pot for 'self service' and instead of mash i had crusty bread and slices of fried pollenta on the side to make the dish more 'portable' made for a great combination

Pretty nice and really satisying in winter. I used tinned lentils instead of dried and just added them 3 minutes before the end of cooking.

A fantastic winter recipe, made even better with the addition of chilli. We had it with jacket wedges instead of mash and it worked a treat.

This a gorgeous recipe! My one & half year old absolutely loved it, she wolfed it down. Was even better the next day as all the flavours had merged. Really tasty! Thx Good Food for sharing this one with us.

My goodness, so delicious! Lentils took a little longer than the recipe stated, we used meatballs instead of sausages and parsley instead of rosemary, but still so so very good!

My husband loved it (and he is normally the cook in the family!) mum and dad loved it so much that they asked for the recipe straight away! I added thyme and mushrooms and used goodquality cumberland sausages - also did cheesy mash instead of rosemary, it was just delicious and I would certainly make this again!

Even The Husband ate it - and normally lentils provoke mutiny! Did normal mash - and wish I had made the sauce more garlicky to compensate. Good that dried green lentils don't need soaking these days - makes it all seem less of a chore. Supermarket didn't have any Italian sausages... would imagine they'd take this up a notch - I just used decent pork ones.

Have cooked this twice now and both times everyone really enjoyed it, I doubled up on the ingredients because there was a lot of us (not the garlic though) and have now passed on the recipe. Excellent and easy

Delicious, I made with sicilian sausages left over from my brother's wedding and multiplied the recipe by one and a half. The rest will go in the freezer today.

Despite adding a fresh green chilli, and a teaspoon of paprika, we found this quite bland. We ate it...so was ok ... but nothing special. The garlic and rosemary mashed potato was lovely though!!!
