  • 1-2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 1 clove garlic crushed
  • 4 rashers/125g bacon chopped
  • 2 large or 3 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 600ml/1pt vegetable or chicken stock
  • 300ml/1/2pt milk
  • 500g peas, frozen or fresh
  • 4 slices/125g cooked ham cut into small pieces

    1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan. Gently fry the onions, garlic and bacon over a low heat for about 10 mins until the onions are soft and the bacon is browned.
    2. Add the potatoes and stock to the pan, bring to the boil, turn down heat and simmer for about 10 mins until potatoes are cooked.
    3. Pour in milk and tip peas into pan, simmer for a further few mins until peas are done. remove from heat.
    4. Add chopped ham to the pan, then blend until smooth. season with salt, pepper and a little sugar if needed.
    5. Serve with big wedges of homemade crusty bread.

Very good! We added sweet corn as didn't have enough peas in freezer. Also added ham after blending. Even our 8month old loved this (we added salt and pepper after splitting his portion from ours).

This soup is beautiful! I like thick pea soup so the consistency is perfect for me. I did not have bacon but will try it with smokey bacon next time as that sounds yum! I included a leek. It is gorgeous.

Not too keen on this recipe, instead of ham i used gammon and instead of panchetta i used bacon to sprinkle on the top. and the water from the gammon i put in the soup to make it abit thinner as this does get thick!

Absolutely delicious soup recipe, in fact, one of the nicest soup's I have ever tasted. It is a big hit with my family, inc the children. We have it at least once a week with some home made bread. We eat it as a main meal as it is very filling. I add more garlic and milk to my recipe, lovely (",)

Lovely soup thumbs up in my house
Hold!!!! I added 1 1/2 pints of stock as didn't
Look enough, used 2 potatoes will use 3 next
Time as I like it a bit thicker, served with
Bread rolls, Ummmmmmmmmmmm!!

We loved this soup. I only added 1 potato as didn't want it too thick. Worked well. Added half the ham with the peas then the remainder after blitzing. Nice to have visible meat in the soup. Would definitely make this again.

I have just tried this for the first time and not only were the instructions easy to follow but I had all the ingredients in so hardly any effort required at all. The result, well it's delicious and to be honest I'm quite surprised that I have made something that tasty! Thank you for the recipe, I will definitely show this one off again in the near future.

This is yummy thanks Lou - we used up our leftover christmas ham and some frozen petit pois due to go out of date , used pancetta as that's what I had - great result. It's very thick so you may want more stock or water.

Most delicious Pea and Ham soup I've tasted! Thank you! :-)

kevingriffith's picture

do you need to soak the peas over night and them use them or are they fine to use?

Really lovely, used leftover Christmas ham and no bacon, but still very tasty. Would definitely make again.
