Method

  1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Dry-fry the mince and onion in a large non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Stir frequently to break up the mince, until well browned. Add the mushrooms and plain flour, followed by the stock and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer, then gently cook for 10 mins.

  2. Meanwhile, to make the cobbles, mix the self-raising flour and thyme together in a bowl. Stir in the yogurt with enough cold water to form a scone-like dough. On a lightly floured surface, roll out to the thickness of about 1.5cm and use a cutter to stamp out 12 x 5cm rounds.

  3. Stir the peas into the mince mixture, then transfer to a baking dish. Randomly place the cobbles on top of the mince, then bake for 20-25 mins, until cobbles are risen and golden brown. This is good served with horseradish sauce.

Needed seasoning. Maybe a drop of red wine would add to flavour too.
Worked well with mash potatoes.

This is the first dish on here where the outcome was not to my standard at least. The meal was bland and lacking. Sorry :(

Great recipe thanks. I think though some people might not get the sauce correct, as the wording is a little unclear. Add the 2tbsp of plain flour after the mushrooms have cooked for a while and stir in well, cook for a minute before adding the stock/worcestershire sauce. Then follow the rest of the process. It gave mine a thick juicy sauce. I added some diced carrot, but other than that it was exactly as recipe said and was delicious.

I make a version of this which is decidedly unhealthy - I make the cobbler into 'dumplings' by adding suet to the flour and mixing with thyme and water (no yoghurt). I increase the quantity of stock a bit so that when the dumplings go on they can absorb a bit on the bottom, while becoming lovely and crispy on the top. I also add carrots to the mince mixture. This isn't healthy - it obviously increases the fat content no end - but it is delicious and perfect winter comfort food.

First recipe used from this site and looked at previous comments before placing in oven. Added chopped garlic and chilli in marinade (tsp of each). Absolutely loved it ! Forgot to put the thyme in the cobbles, but they were delicious and fluffy regardless. Wife was well impressed. :)

I think is a great recipe. However the sauce is a bit bland so I perked it up with seasoning and a spicy tomato pasta sauce. I also added sliced carrot in with the mince.

Doubled amounts and swapped chestnut mushrooms for cheap button mushrooms. Good comfort food for cold day and everyone ate masses despite the cobblers being a bit tough on top (due to spending a tad too long in a not v hot oven to slow things down a bit).

Lovely. I added celery, carrot and peas. A small criticism - I think 500 mis of stock is too much. About 1/2 that would be plenty.

family didn't enjoy this at all, had no taste and was bland. Not sure if I did something wrong but followed the recipe to the letter? Will not be making again

Was okay, but a bit bland when tasted it while cooking, so tried to rescue it by adding extra Worcester Sauce and tomato puree. If I made it again I would add some more herbs & garlic. On the plus side the dumplings were fab - I made double and added in some grated cheese.

Good recipe. My fussy son ate all the meat mixture but not the cobbles. I also had to cook the mushrooms separately (we love them but he hates them!). As a result, this amount only feeds three. I also found that this quantity of dough only makes 8-9 cobbles. Since I expected my son would not eat them, this was not a problem!

A firm family favourite.I used to add a tin of campbells condensed oxtail soup to this but now can only get ordinary oxtail soup.still makes a great addition to taste and consistency. Try it !!

I made this with my flatmates and it was a huge success even though I forgot to add the Worcestershire sauce.

ps Forgot to say, that one of mine was made with quorn mince and the other with beef. Quorn version was tasty ... think the red wine and fish-free worcester sauce added nice taste to it.

Family really enjoyed this. Good old fashioned wholesome grub for a chilly evening! I had a couple of carrots, a parsnip and quarter of a swede that needed using up, so I diced them and added them to the stew mix. I also added a splash of red wine. Very nice ... think I slightly overcooked my scones though as they were a tad crispy, but lovely texture inside and underneath. YUM

Wooah! Amazing! So much better than I thought it would be.

Didn't have mushrooms, but decided to experiment and add a can of green lentils, and a mix of beef and mushroom stock.

Honestly, don't know if I've eaten anything better!
