I would like to try this recipe, but am worried, as it seems a tad complicated. On the plus side, who said peanut butter is savoury? I always add jam with peanut butter - yum!!

This is easily the best recipe on goodfood. Quite tricky but after a few attempts I think I've finally got the hang of it. It's now a staple in our house, thank you.

i don't know how you've managed to make peanut butter on toast look so unappetizing but i enjoyed some of the comments!

I would suggest replacing margarine with butter as surely no-one has margarine anymore.

For a special occasion....try the addition of some Rose's Lime Marmalade..I know, it's an expensive ingredient, but for that special someone...it's worth it. However, it looks revolting....but tastes heavenly. I hope this hasn't spoilt the simplicity of this ultra amazing recipe..how did you come up with it?? Surely we#ll be seeing you on the Food Channel sometime soon?

Great recipe, but with winter approaching and the prospect of hopefully squeezing into my xmas dress with all my lady bumps where they should be and being able to breath at the same time, I'm trying to stay away from carbs at the moment. Do you have any alternatives to using bread? I don't think Ryvita works well in a toaster?

As an alternative to bread I occasionally just smear the ingredients over my hands, I find it cuts out carbs while adding an interesting twist to a classic recipe. Also if you do try out the smear method I suggest not washing for 2 to 3 days beforehand so you get some of the lovely flavours and aromas of your dirty life into the dish. Enjoy

A serious slurp of Tabasco sauce added to the peanut butter makes all the difference. Add to taste.

Have no idea why this is so highly rated? I tried it today with high hopes after reading previous comments and was truly disappointed with the result. I stuck to the recipe completely, except I substituted the margarine for real butter and the bread for old socks - would not recommend this recipe :-(

I tried with chocolate spread last night (scrummy 20 March) but the colour clashes with the bedroom ceiling and its a devil to get up when your sticky side is down. This is probably 'flag as inappropriate' but sometimes you have to live dangerously...

You take all the best of the previous suggestions (peanut butter, jam, Tabasco, cucumber etc) and sandwich it all between two slices of good white bread. To complete this delicacy it is then coated in chip-shop batter and deep-fried in 1kg of margarine untill golden brown.

Use only the cheapest margarine that you can find. Mmmmm...Or for a luxurious twist, try some lurpack...
