Method

  1. Heat oven to 140C/fan 120C/gas 1. Stir the custard together with the milk. Trim the crusts from the bread, cut into triangles, then place in a large bowl with the raisins or dried cherries. Pour over the custard mixture, then carefully stir everything together so all the pieces of bread are coated. Lightly grease a small ovenproof dish with butter, then spoon in the mixture.
  2. Cook for 30-35 mins until there is just a slight wobble in the centre of the custard. Sprinkle over the sugar to cover the surface, then pop under a hot grill for 1-2 mins until the sugar starts to melt and caramelise.

You could add a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard mixture. Delicious!

I used brioche instead of bread and it was yummy. I did have to cook it for a 10 mins longer but I had used a deep dish.

We have this so often!! its the easiest tastiest pudding. I use crustless 50/50 bread and taste the difference custard, the type of custard does make a difference, used cheap before and though still tasty nowhere near as good. Usually add some extra fruit. Never had a problem with the cooking times. Its just as nice the next day - I make just the same amount for the 2 of us as I would 4!!!

If you really like Bread & butter pudding, AVOID THIS. It really is not very nice, especially if you compare it to a real traditional version.

Didnt like it at all. Nothing like a traditional bread and butter pud. Id much rather take longer making it and get a good flavour

Great. Did need extra cooking but we liked it a bit runny. I blow torched the sugar and it gave it a lovely brulee style. Small portions though. Mary

I was looking for an easy bread pudding recipe for my leftover bread. Used this recipe, add a bit off cinnamon, nutmeg and 2 tbs of caster sugar to the mixture. Cook for about an hour or so for it to cook properly. Overall I am not crazy about it but it's a good recipe for my leftover bread!
