Chocolate marble cake

Chocolate marble cake

Marble cake is a classic childhood cooking memory. Whether using lurid colours for a psychedelic finish, or just chocolate and vanilla, it's a teatime treat

Method

  1. Heat oven to 180C/gas 160C/gas 4. Grease a 20cm cake tin and line the bottom with a circle of greaseproof paper. If you want to make life easy, simply put all the ingredients (except the cocoa powder) into a food processor and whizz for 1-2 mins until smooth. If you prefer to mix by hand, beat the butter and sugar together, then add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Fold through the flour, milk and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
  2. Divide the mixture between 2 bowls. Stir the cocoa powder into the mixture in one of the bowls. Take 2 spoons and use them to dollop the chocolate and vanilla cake mixes into the tin alternately. When all the mixture has been used up (and if young kids are doing this, you'll need to ensure the base of the tin is fairly evenly covered), tap the bottom on your work surface to ensure that there aren't any air bubbles. Take a skewer and swirl it around the mixture in the tin a few times to create a marbled effect.
  3. Bake the cake for 45-55 mins until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Turn out onto a cooling rack and leave to cool. Will keep for 3 days in an airtight container or freeze for up to 3 months.

My first try at this. The marble effect didn't quite look as I thought it would, but a very tasty and light cake indeed. I added some chocolate icing to the top to stop it drying out. I threw in some freshly grated cinnimon and dried sultanas into the mixture, makes a great addition to the recipe.

Tried this out today and it worked out perfectly. The cake itself was moist and light and the marbled effect looked so professional and pretty. I followed the advice of others and topped with brown sugar part way through cooking which made a lovely crunchy topping. I will definitely be making this again

Too sweet and too dry. Using melted chocolate works and tastes better. Very easy to make though, especially with children.

Baked this in a jiffy for father in law's birthday. The quickest cake recipe ever, but it did turn out a tad dry( even though I had added extra milk as someone suggested). Not my favourite marble cake recipe, must admit.

My 7 year old daughter and I made this. Very easy instructions to follow, easy to mix and fun to make. It turned out beautifully. Very light and airy cake and the whole family have enjoyed it both on its own and the kids loved it with custard too !

Hi all, As an absolute amature, I was looking for a simple recipe to test out my new food processor. Came across this one from a google search, and as I already had all the ingredients apart from the cocoa powder, decided this one was the one to go for. Bought the cocoa powder and started cooking. The recipe has a typo at the beginning as it suggests two cooking temperatures. Went for 160C fas 4. Also would have preferred a weight for the cocoa powder as my 2 tablespoons were a little excessive, more like two heaped tablespoons and it made the cake rather more chocolaty than I wouod have liked. It looks and tastes great both as a slice of cake with tea, or as a dessert with cream. Have done both and will certainly try this again as those I have given some to give it the thumbs up too.
