  • 225g butter, softened
  • 225g caster sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 225g self-raising flour
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder

Method

  1. Heat oven to 180C/gas 160C/gas 4. Grease a 20cm cake tin and line the bottom with a circle of greaseproof paper. If you want to make life easy, simply put all the ingredients (except the cocoa powder) into a food processor and whizz for 1-2 mins until smooth. If you prefer to mix by hand, beat the butter and sugar together, then add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Fold through the flour, milk and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
  2. Divide the mixture between 2 bowls. Stir the cocoa powder into the mixture in one of the bowls. Take 2 spoons and use them to dollop the chocolate and vanilla cake mixes into the tin alternately. When all the mixture has been used up (and if young kids are doing this, you’ll need to ensure the base of the tin is fairly evenly covered), tap the bottom on your work surface to ensure that there aren’t any air bubbles. Take a skewer and swirl it around the mixture in the tin a few times to create a marbled effect.
  3. Bake the cake for 45-55 mins until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Turn out onto a cooling rack and leave to cool. Will keep for 3 days in an airtight container or freeze for up to 3 months.

Lovely cake - really easy but perfect to just whip up if you fancy a nice cake for the weekend.

I made this cake for a tea/ coffee afternoon for the elderly and they absolutely loved it. I served it with lightly whipped vanilla flavoured cream. The next time I will make a ganache topping or buttercream icing as it was a little dry, other than that it is a great cake!

Having our first barbecue of the season tonight so I thought I'd make a cake to celebrate!
However, I did end up eating about half of the batter before baking it. This must be a sign that the cake will be delicious!

The marble effect turned out really well, though the outer parts of the cake did seem a bit dry, the middle was nice and moist. I think the cake would have been great with a chocolate buttercream filling, or a chocolate icing on top.

Easy to make - whack it in the processor! The family and neighbours loved it! Moist, delicious cake.

Actually used this recipe. Slightly adapted [ used real chocolate instead of powder - because I am SUPER healthy obviously ] turned out AWESOME.

I made this cake for the first time. After reading comments I replaced some of the butter with oil. It turned out really moist. Easy to make, just takes a while to bake.

Hi, I have always wanted to make a basic marble cake but failed badly..thank you so much for your receipe, I managed to do it really well, I didn't add in the cocoa powder so to make it into a butter cake.
It,s fantastic... Great texture, great taste. I will definitely keep this receipe forever...love it...thumbs up 

Wow iv just made this cake again! This time I doubled the mixture and put white choc chips in the vanilla and milk cho chips in the choc mix.... This was a massive cake and delish!!! I went choco mad and put chocolate on the top too... Scrummy!!!!
