  • 225g caster sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 225g self-raising flour
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder

Method

  1. Heat oven to 180C/gas 160C/gas 4. Grease a 20cm cake tin and line the bottom with a circle of greaseproof paper. If you want to make life easy, simply put all the ingredients (except the cocoa powder) into a food processor and whizz for 1-2 mins until smooth. If you prefer to mix by hand, beat the butter and sugar together, then add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Fold through the flour, milk and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
  2. Divide the mixture between 2 bowls. Stir the cocoa powder into the mixture in one of the bowls. Take 2 spoons and use them to dollop the chocolate and vanilla cake mixes into the tin alternately. When all the mixture has been used up (and if young kids are doing this, you’ll need to ensure the base of the tin is fairly evenly covered), tap the bottom on your work surface to ensure that there aren’t any air bubbles. Take a skewer and swirl it around the mixture in the tin a few times to create a marbled effect.
  3. Bake the cake for 45-55 mins until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Turn out onto a cooling rack and leave to cool. Will keep for 3 days in an airtight container or freeze for up to 3 months.

Really easy recipe made with the kids for some half term fun! Absolutely delicious easiest marble cake recipe I have found. The cake is really moist but we did add some chocolate fudge flavour icing on the top just to add to the calorific content !!!
I'm sure it would last at least 3 days but doubt it will in our house!
5 stars if the iPad would co-operate.

I tried many marble cake recipes, but THIS ONE RULES!!!! not only that it is the most simple of all, but it bakes in any kind of dish that you have. i tried silicon, ceramic, aluminium, name it it turned out great, and yummy and soft and delicious.
Btw, I and a huge fan of this kind of cakes :-)

I make this regularly and it's always eaten up in 3 days! Very simple to make and delicious. I find I have to add about 3 extra tbsp. of milk to the batter though - and it's done in exactly 45 minutes in my oven.

Hi I am 13 years old and have just made this cake, it was so simple that I forgot to put the greaseproof paper on the bottom :( .But after all the cake tasted AMAZING!!!! Thank You :-]

Have made this several tmes now - square, round and loaf shape. Always good - loaf shape took longer to cook than the others.

Simple and a yummy cake. I prefer making hassle-free cakes and this is one of those cakes which require less work and ingredients and turns out perfect.

Lovely cake!! I did as someone recommended below an added some ground almond as well as the flour and threw in some almond extract. Really lovely cake!! 5*

This is a great recipe, I made it for 10 people, everybody complemented the aesthetic finish and light texture of the cake! The recipe is very easy to follow and remember for next time. I added a little extra smashed milk chocolate into mine to which the cake had moments of wonderfully soft and silky chocolate against the lightness of the marble sponge! I definitely recommend this extra part!

Really easy and yummy. I made 2 separate cakes and joined them together with a great big smear of Nutella. Cakes just required less cooking time, kids and hubby loved it.

Made this yesterday & today! Threw all ingredients in mixer & whizzed, OH wanted the oven for different temperature for our tea, watched film on tv & completely forgot about cake mix. This morning I put in the oven for 45 mins not expecting great results but it turned out fine. A very durable recipe.
