Ingredients

  • 350g basmati rice
  • 50g butter

  • 1 heaped tbsp caster sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon or 1⁄2 cinnamon stick
  • 6 cardamom pod, shelled and seeds crushed
  • just under 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 5 tbsp raisin

Method

  1. Put all the ingredients in a large pan with 1 tsp salt and 500ml water, then heat until boiling and the butter has melted.

  2. Stir, cover and leave to simmer for 6 mins. Take off the heat and leave, still covered, for 5 mins. Fluff up and tip into a warm bowl to serve.

Found it a bit too sweet for my taste but I'm sure with the right dish it would be lovely!

I cooked this on a very gentile simmer for 20 minutes and it cooked great! Not a little crunchy as people were commenting here. I also tried it yesterday, but found that the cinnamon and sugar a little too much. So I halved cinnamon and used a tablespoon of sugar rather than a heaped one, and omitted the raisins... it came out great! And a bit more suited to my taste! :)

Use this for almost everything that goes with rice. Always make a large batch and freeze in portions for two, so that we never run out

Lovely. Such a nice way of cooking rice, everyone was really surprised by how tasty it was. Added about a tablespoon of sugar rather than a heaped tablespoon and it wasn't too sweet at all.

Delicious! I used sultanas instead of raisins as I didn't have any and served it with the Bobotie. Will definitely cook again and again.

Lovely, couldn't believe I'd made it myself! I didn't add the raisins. It went really well with Moroccan-style chicken with lentils, but when I ate it by itself it was a teeny bit sweet. Hubby loved it too - if only my daughter would have eaten it. It (together with the moroccan style chicken) was scrumptious.

I loved this rice dish, it made a great change to the usual boring white rice, it was sweet and a nice treat to go with the Bobotie... yum

Made this with the suggested bobotie and apricot blatjang as a meal to celebrate the world cup. All were gorgeous! And they'd all make excellent dinner party recipes as there is 40 minutes after the bobotie goes in and the rice is all made in one pot so i even had time to sit and have a glass of South African wine! Highly recommended, very tasty.

Love this rice. Have made it a few times and think it's great. The first few times I made it with the cinnamon stick. I'd run out tonight so used ground cinnamon. Not quite as nice and it takes away from the yellow colour. Still not bad though!

Really easy - comes out perfect every time! Added a few more raisins than the recipe suggests but then needed to slightly reduce the sugar as a bit too sweet. Makes a quick supper seem just a little bit special with hardly any effort!

Lovely rice. I also cooked it for a few minutes longer to avoid any crunch - but I think there may have been no need so next time I'll follow the recipe exactly.

Lovely way to cook rice. Nice yellow colour, cooked it longer so the rice was not crunchy. Cooled the leftover mixture quickly and had it cold next day with a salad - yummy!
