  • 8 rashers streaky bacon
  • a quarter medium Savoy cabbage (about 200g/8oz)

Method

  1. Chop the onion, carrot, celery and garlic in a food processor. Heat the oil over a medium heat in a large saucepan. Add the vegetables and potatoes, season well, then reduce the heat and cover the pan. Gently cook for about 5 mins until starting to soften, then add the stock, turn up the heat and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 mins more, or until all the vegetables are tender.

  2. While the soup is cooking, grill or fry the bacon until crisp, then cut into strips. Shred the cabbage, discarding the core.

  3. Whizz the soup in the food processor until smooth, then return to the pan and add the cabbage. Simmer for a few mins until the cabbage is just tender, then season to taste and serve scattered with the bacon.

I used half a cooking apple rather than celery, no bacon either and used my usual 'that looks about right' for my measurements...also as it was slightly thick I added some milk to just thin slightly after blitzing with the blender. The apple nicely sweetened it and didn't need the bacon so good enough for my veggie friends.

This was really nice. I don't understand the 'bland' comments. There are 2 bacon rashers, 1/2 clove garlic and 1/4 of an onion per bowl. I think bland is impossible. It's a lovely, thick vegetable soup.

The title of this dish sounds wonderful and the picture looks scrummy so I rushed to make this for lunch today. I have to say I was a little let down, it is on the bland side. The flavour of the garlic really comes through but doesn't over power. The bacon lifts it but next time I think I'd use smoked bacon for extra flavour. Caramelising the onion and perhaps roasting the carrot might help to enhance the flavours. That being said, it wasn't unpleasant and I did scoff a bowlful with a buttered roll & the rest is in the fridge for tomorrow.

Have made this soup a couple of times. I made a few adjustments, didn't use celery but chopped a small leek. Added some parsley and dried chives. Also used some left over chicken or even better with left over lamb!

Sorry but I didn't like this at all. I followed he recipe exact but it was just too watery, I threw it away :(

Dunno ... wasn't impressed and we found this rather bland. Bacon gives it some extra kick, but doesn't save the meal.

This is a great winter warmer soup, I enjoyed the added extra of the bacon as I felt it completed the recipes. Personally this wouldn't be on my favourite list of soup but I would make again if I had leftover Savoy cabbage.

Used the stew suggestion and added some dumplings. I kept tasting it along the way couldnt wait until it was ready soo tasty. Hadnt got celery used leeks instead. I never knew cabbage could be so useful. Will make the soup version next

For the stew: I substituted cubes of sweet potato (in Dutch 'zoete bataat') for the potato and added a few spoons of creme fraiche. Extra cabbage, too. Delicious!
