Malt chocolate ice cream with Oreo cookie crunch

Malt chocolate ice cream with Oreo cookie crunch

Nothing beats homemade ice cream and the beauty is there's nothing to do on the day... unless you fancy chocolate sauce on top

Method

  1. Bring the milk and cream to a simmer in a pan. Meanwhile, whisk the egg yolks and sugar until combined. Pour the milk onto the eggs, stirring well. Pour this back into a cleaned-out saucepan and slowly heat through for about 10 mins, stirring all the time. Don't allow the liquid to simmer. It should thicken as it heats up and is ready when it's thick enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon.
  2. Pour the hot custard mix over the chocolate in a bowl and allow it to melt. Add the Ovaltine and whisk until smooth.
  3. Cool, then churn in an ice-cream machine. As it thickens, add the biscuits. Freeze. When ready to eat, serve with White chocolate sauce (below).

We enjoyed the ice cream, but the Oreo biscuits went soft, so we are experimenting with chocolate chips instead.

Ice cream is nice - don't think it needs the biscuits - just a plain malty ice cream is fine!

Anna - Oreo cookies ARE available in Malta. Try Smart Supermarket or GS. Even smaller chains have Oreo Cookies. G'luck.

Made this yesterday and it worked really well. I added 2 chopped Snickers bars for a bit of added naughtiness as we had munched half of the Oreo cookies as we chopped them and it was heaven in a bowl. The Oreos don't stay crisp, as Mary rightly said, but for me it just made it a bit like cookie dough, which works well with ice cream anyway. Goanna, Ovaltine is a malted hot drink powder you usually make up with hot milk. And anna, without an ice cream maker you can place the custard mix straight into the freezer in a container and churn it yourself with a spatula every hour or so until set, adding the biscuit pieces at the stage just before it becomes completely frozen.

Amazing, based on previous feedback I add the Orios right at the very end and make sure they aren't broken into too small pieces. Instead of plain chocolate, ive melted 2 mars bars into the mix...incredible results. Also have it without the white chocolate sauce as that seems a bit too much effort.

Just finished making this recipe! Never made ice cream before but it was really simple. There is a fair amount of washing up but if you are efficient it's not too bad and definitely worth the end result! Didn't use an ice cream maker but took it out of the freezer every 30 minutes and gave it a good whisk so the ice crystals didn't make it hard. When making it, I also added some liquid glucose (approx. 2 tsp) as I had heard this makes it creamier and smoother, not sure whether it really did anything though as I don't know what it's like without it! Will definitely be making again with some other possible variations.

This was excellent and very easy to make. I halved the recipe and didn't have any issues. The biscuits don't really add anything so I will omit these next time, but I like the idea of adding chopped chocolate bar (perhaps a crunchie) or maybe caramel sauce right at the end of the freezing time.
