Method

  1. Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Simmer the potatoes for about 20 minutes until tender, then drain and mash with half the butter and a little milk. Season.
  2. Meanwhile, bring the rest of the milk to a simmer in a frying pan, add the fish and bay leaves, cover and cook for 6-8 minutes. Remove the fish (keep the poaching milk) and flake into a dish, sprinkle the prawns and egg on top.
  3. Melt the rest of the butter in a pan, add the flour and mix, then gradually add 300ml of the poaching milk, mixing constantly until all the milk has been absorbed. Bring to the boil and simmer for a couple of minutes then take off the heat and mix in the parsley. Season. Pour over the fish and prawns. Spoon the mash over so it covers everything, then sprinkle with the cheese.
  4. Cook for 20 minutes in the oven until the top is golden.

Which fish

Use sustainably caught, white, kid-friendly fish for this, such as Pacific cod or hoki. Dry it well before cooking to remove excess moisture and the sauce will stay nice and creamy.

Followed the recipe but used less butter. Used cod and Ikea prawns from my freezer. Also threw in some peas. Very clean plates - so a big thumbs up!

Lovely recipe. Didnt use the eggs - never have understood why you use boiled eggs with fish! Added mushrooms, and just used enough milk to cover the fish, which turned out to be just the right amount for the sauce. Only used half the amount of butter as well. Will definately make again

It looks and smells nice but I can't agree more with how labour intensive and dishwashing filling this dish is. Crazy! I hope it's worth it!

This was fabulous. I included the addition of a small onion, fried in butter until transparent but not brown, to the sauce, together with some Cayenne pepper which gave it a lovely background warmth. I only used 2 eggs, as they aren't appreciated by everyone in our family! Its a definite do-again recipe, though!

used salmon and cod, no eggs. There is way too much flour and butter inlcuded for this dish, i had to halve the roux I made for the sauce as it was too much for 300ml of poaching milk. Family liked it except 5yr son who said it was disgusting!!

Loved this recipe, but only used the butter. Put half the butter for the sauce mix +a bit for mashing potatoes. It was delicious!

This recipe is absolutely delicious, it's a fiddly to make (better if you cook the fish and potatoes ahead), but well worth it.

This recipe is good if you add chopped plum/fresh tomatoes or cooked leeks to the fish mixture before you put into the pie dish and cover with potato. This adds a good tasty twist to this delicious dish.

If you use half and half potato and cauliflower, mashed together with a little grain mustard, the topping is delicious, less calories and even veggie-hating children won't notice!

The few fish pies I have previously made have always been quite runny but the texture and sauce of this one were just right. Will definitely use this recipe again but possibly leave out the eggs.

So easy and so yummy. I added a fish stock cube to the sauce before pouring over the fish which made it a bit tastier and I also put spinach over the fish and prawns before adding the sauce and the mash which worked well.

made this for the first time, and although the taste was pleasant, it was quite bland, and the sauce dried up - even though I thinned it down with more milk)! Had to make a parsley sauce to moisten it! Plus the amaount of washing-up required - not sure it was worth the effort! Thanx though - have to try or else how do you know!
