Method

  1. Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Butter and line the bases of 2 x 450g loaf tins with baking parchment. To make the streusel topping, rub the butter into the flour, then mix in the demerara sugar and chopped pecans. Melt the chocolate either in the microwave or in a small glass bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir until smooth and remove from the heat.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and caster sugar until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the egg, beating well between each addition. Sift together the flour, baking powder and cocoa and fold in using a large metal spoon. Add the mashed banana and chocolate and mix well.
  3. Divide the mixture between the 2 tins and top each with the streusel. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool on a rack, then wrap in baking parchment or foil.

I'll definitely be making this one again. I found the topping pretty easy to make and it was worth it as it gave the cake a nice texture. Looked pretty too!

I made this cake in one large loaf tin and served it with vanilla ice-cream for 4 adults and 4 children after Sunday lunch. Well, what can i say, gone in 60 seconds!! there was about a quarter left over which my hubby and I devoured that evening with a cuppa! A very greeedy day, but ok one and a while. Easy to make and looked great.

the streusel topping made the cake a bit too dry and mostly fell off when i sliced the cake so might not bother with that again. Personally I didn't think the flavours of rich chocolate and banana blended too well but the other half loved it so I'll make it again. Nice with custard.

Great cake, so easy to make and I got loads of compliments for it! Didn't bother with the streusel topping but drizzled a little melted chocolate over the top instead ^_^ Will definitely make again!

Great cake, its worth making the streusel topping, but I had to add quite a bit more flour, not sure about it making 2 cakes, i made 2 but they came out quite flat so will just make one next time but its yum!

Fantastic cake, easy to make and delicate balance of chocolate and banana flavours. Made it as a sandwich cake in 2 x 8inch cake tins and used a marscapone filling. Agree with others that this cake would be wonderful as a pudding with icecream.

With one son that wanted banana cake and the other a chocolate cake, this recipe was just great - killed two birds with one stone. Made just one cake - very moist but may add one more banana next time. Streusel was good but not really essential. Went down a treat and will definitely be making this one again.

This cake was very heavy inside, I'm not sure if mine just sunk a bit though! It still tasted good, even though I didn't make the topping!

Made this a few weeks ago for an office cake sale. Came out well with streusel topping but thought it needed a bit more banana. Have just made another batch and left off topping but upped the banana count to three. Just right!

This is just gorgeous! A huge hit with everyone and lots of requests for the recipe! Very easy too. I added an extra banana too then I could pretend it was healthy! Didn't bother with the topping - it was perfect already! Nice gooey, rich texture. You MUST make this!

I have made this a few times with gluten free plain flour and it is still delicious - a little drier though so cook it for slightly less time.

Good with ice cream or cream but thought too heavy on its own, most of it went in the bin. Wouldn't make it again.

Lovely cake. Was worried that the cocoa might make it too bitter as I have tried doing a chocolate cake before but this recipe is fantastic and its just sweet enough and tastes delicious!
