Method

  1. Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Butter and line the bases of 2 x 450g loaf tins with baking parchment. To make the streusel topping, rub the butter into the flour, then mix in the demerara sugar and chopped pecans. Melt the chocolate either in the microwave or in a small glass bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir until smooth and remove from the heat.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and caster sugar until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the egg, beating well between each addition. Sift together the flour, baking powder and cocoa and fold in using a large metal spoon. Add the mashed banana and chocolate and mix well.
  3. Divide the mixture between the 2 tins and top each with the streusel. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool on a rack, then wrap in baking parchment or foil.

Cooked this twice now and both times the cooking time has been about mins. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but it also seems a bit dry. It is yummy though :)

Excellent cake - I also added some walnuts to it to give it a crunch. I'm taking it to work tomorrow, fingers crossed everyone loves it as much as I did.

I've made this many times, just chucking in the ingredients without much care, and it always turns out perfect. Lovely and moist and tasty.

Made this as I wanted to use up bananas, it was really easy and looked great. I didn't bother with the topping. It didn't last very long in our house and I was surprised as bananas are not that popular with some people. Overall would recommend this recipe. Easy to make and delicious.

Wow! This was amazing! I changed it slightly by using milk chocolate because I don't like dark, I also couldn't find the sieve so didn't bother folding the flour and cocoa into the wet ingredients, and after I put them in the oven I realised I had forgotten to add the baking powder... and I'm still having people asking me to make it again, cant even begin too imagine how great its going to be when I make it properly!!! Definitely take the time to make the topping too, it adds a wonderful crunch to the cake and doesn't take away any of the banana and chocolate goodness.

Went down very well at work today, some people went back when it was all gone and even ate the crumbs! I didn't make the topping though... I might add walnuts next time as suggested. Was incredibly moist, I think it's important to use large bananas. Mine were over a week old so nice and ripe. And it didn't taste overwhelmingly of banana, was a good blend of choc and banana....really good :)

Very moist and moreish! Didn't do the strudel topping or add the dark chocolate (didn't have any), but the cake still turned out to be wonderfully delicious. I'll definitely make this again.

Delicious used duck eggs and milk instead of dark chocolate as well as cadburys bournvita cocoa - used slightly less than recipe suggested. Had to increase my flour slightly as the duck eggs were quite large. But this was delicious, I had overbought on bananas so had to find a recipe to use them up. From now on will be buying bananas just to make this yummy cake. Keeps really well too.
