Method

  1. Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Butter and line the bases of 2 x 450g loaf tins with baking parchment. To make the streusel topping, rub the butter into the flour, then mix in the demerara sugar and chopped pecans. Melt the chocolate either in the microwave or in a small glass bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir until smooth and remove from the heat.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and caster sugar until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the egg, beating well between each addition. Sift together the flour, baking powder and cocoa and fold in using a large metal spoon. Add the mashed banana and chocolate and mix well.
  3. Divide the mixture between the 2 tins and top each with the streusel. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool on a rack, then wrap in baking parchment or foil.

Was looking forward to this loaf cake. It was very easy to make and bake but end result was really disappointing. Had one mouthful and it didn't really taste of anything! Will not be making again

Really bananary and light. I thought the streusel topping was definitely worth it - looks pretty and also tasted lovely with the nuts (I used walnuts). Best to use medium eggs, as a bit too heavy with large.

Lovely moist cake, topping is definately worth making, we left out the nuts and added extra demerara sugar and it tasted great, nice crunchy contrast to the soft cake. Very easy to make, my 11 year old son made it without any problem at all, he will definately be making it again!

Fab! This went down brilliantly! I topped it with a chocolate ganache topping instead and it was lovely.

Tried this out on a husband who doesn't like cooked bananas - seems this way of cooking them will be the exception!! Didn't make 2 cakes, chose to make 1 cake in a 2lb loaf tin....will try it muffin sized next time. Froze brilliantly - froze half; ate half - light, moist, chocolatey yum.....

This recipe was quick and easy to make, and was a HUGE hit with my husband. He likes all the cakes I made, but really loved this one! I made it in the 2 1lb tins as suggested and liked that there was a cake to eat now, and one to freeze for another time. Unless I was totally strapped for time I would continue to add the stresusel topping as it only took a couple of minutes and the sugary pecan flavour was a great compliment to the chocolate and banana.

Really lovely cake. Was worried it would be too banana-y as I don't like banana bread, but you don't taste banana at all. Great served warm with ice cream and toffee sauce or with a cup of tea. Yum.

Made this cake twice now and people actually thought it was shop-bought! I'm baking my third now as I type, I use 4 small bananas, I bake it in one larger tin and don't use this topping but instead I cover it with nutella chocolate spread... Quite a hit!

Made this the other day, because I had a glut of bananas to use up. Lovely easy recipe, I didn't bother with the topping though. all who tried it loved it, including my three children and their friends, and have been asked to supply the recipe. I made it in one 2lb tin instead of two 1lb tins, and extended the cooking time to about an hour. Perfect!

Really easy, delicious recipe but we felt that it should have another banana, also adding some walnuts or pecans would be exciting!
