Method

  1. Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Butter and line the bases of 2 x 450g loaf tins with baking parchment. To make the streusel topping, rub the butter into the flour, then mix in the demerara sugar and chopped pecans. Melt the chocolate either in the microwave or in a small glass bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir until smooth and remove from the heat.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and caster sugar until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the egg, beating well between each addition. Sift together the flour, baking powder and cocoa and fold in using a large metal spoon. Add the mashed banana and chocolate and mix well.
  3. Divide the mixture between the 2 tins and top each with the streusel. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool on a rack, then wrap in baking parchment or foil.

Fabulous ! I only had one loaf tin, so used that and the remaining of the mixture I put into 6 x muffin tins (baked for 25 mins only). Loved the topping. Had this hot with custard/ice cream.... Mmmmmm - a must for everyone to try. This recipe is worth 6 stars !!

I missed the topping off but it didnt look v impressive so topped it with chocolate ganache and walnuts and then tasted pretty good. I would out 3 bananas in rather than 2 as you could only taste the choc!

This cake went down an absolute storm in our house. My daughter had a cake sale at school we looked up a recipe that we could try to use, for safety we had a practise run. Wow!!! Put it this way only 1 of the cakes from the 2nd batch went in to school.

Delicious, will certainly make again. Didn't bother with topping (having read revues). Felt the urge to plaster thick Cadbury's chocolate on the top but fought it!! Actually I didn't have any otherwise I would definitely have gone for it!

Very nice, but i'd add some solid chocolate chips to the mix next time - i'm a chocoholic and this didn't quite fix my chocolate craving. Still delicious though!

Delicious! I agree there is no need for the streusel.I baked the cake in one, larger tin. I also added 2 tbspn liqueur. It disappeared in no time! A lovely treat.

excellent!!! I used less butter and less sugar I added more chocolate... result: moist, fluffly, tasty even one day after! I did not used the streusel (like suggested)... Also great as a base for a chocolate ice cream :-)

So very moist. Did not do topping. My one year old daughter rated this cake as yum yum. Will definitely do again as it remained moist even the next day.
